Obituary of Glenda Budden
Please share a memory of Glenda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Glenda (Dodie) Budden, on June 4, 2024, in Northwood, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born in Glace Bay on November 13, 1935, she was the daughter of the late, Dave and Nellie (Cryer) Gardiner. She is survived by daughter, Faith (Londo) Scattolon; and son, Gardiner (Cheryl) Budden, Halifax, brothers, Jim Campbell (Dartmouth) and Donnie Campbell (Glace Bay). She was the beloved “Gramma” to Victoria and ‘Grandmother’ to Acton and Kaelyn. She was predeceased by her brother, ‘Buddy’ (Gregory), her brother Ray MacDonald; and her husband, Art Budden.
Dodie had many fond memories of growing up in Table Head, Glace Bay, and spending summers at the Table Head shore. As a young girl, she travelled regularly on the train to Louisburg on the Sydney & Louisburg Railway to spend time with her grandmother whose home was on the site of what is now the Fortress of Louisburg National Historic site. She was blessed with a circle of close friends from an early age that she kept in touch with all her life, even after some moved to other places to live and raise their families.
Most of her life, Dodie was a homemaker. She was a wonderful cook and baker and proudly shared her recipes with her daughter and daughter-in-law. She loved music and was a wonderful dancer - when she and Art would dance, it was a pleasure to watch. Above all things, Dodie was a devoted grandmother. She loved her grandchildren deeply and was so proud of them and their accomplishments and the caring young adults they’ve become.
Dodie loved her little house in Glace Bay. She took great pride in looking after it for over 20 years on her own. Anyone who knew her knew that her cozy little house brought her great pleasure. We were very lucky that she had special friends in Glace Bay whose presence in her life helped her stay in her home as long as possible in recent years: friends like Nina and Shirley who were often her “Savoy buddies”, Mildred who cooked and shared many dinners with our mother, Lisa who helped out with errands and shopping, and Michelle who provided loving care in our mother’s last year and a half in her home and became a close friend.
Special thank you to her nieces, Dianne who visited her in Glace Bay and who was our mother’s refuge during Hurricane Fiona, and Sharon, who visited regularly when our mother moved into long term care. Our deep appreciation to the staff of 3 Center, Northwood, for their kindness and care, in particular in these past few weeks.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation & Burial Specialist, Beechville. A service will take place July 6, 2024, at 11am in T. J. Tracey Glace Bay.
