Obituary of Ida Phalen
We, the family of Ida Phalen, regret to announce her passing on May 22, 2024, at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney, Nova Scotia, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born February 2, 1933, in Amherst, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Evelyn Slack and Otis Rushton.
Ida is survived by her six children; Gail MacKinnon, Darlean (Jim) Whiting, Julianna (Gary) MacGillivray, Rose (Steve) Steiger, Frank (Jackie) Sechi, Karen (DR) MacGillivray, as well as 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her grandsons, David and Austin.
Mom’s life was devoted to her family. Every Sunday her cooking brought her children and grandchildren home to enjoy homemade pizza, bread, chocolate cake, blueberry pies, and especially her fudge. When she wasn’t with her family, Mom loved to pick blueberries, go to the horse races and most of all, to dance. She made wonderful friends along the way, and many of them are still considered to be family by her children.
Her home was always a place where people gathered and were welcome. She saw the good in everyone and never had an unkind word to say. Mom raised her children to believe the world had many more good people than bad, and she lived her life trusting that to be true. The stories of our mother’s unique life will carry on forever.
Our family would like to thank the staff at The Cove Guest Home for the love and care they gave Mom during her time there, and also for the care and compassion shared with our family this past week. We are truly grateful.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of T.J. Tracey Funeral home, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, 902-539-7175. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Monday, May 27, at 10 am with funeral service at 11 am in the chapel, Fr. Bill Burke officiating, reception to follow. A private family burial will take place in Grand Mira.
