Many years ago it was Joan that hired me to teach at Sacred Heart School. She was a wonderful woman - a woman of faith, laughter, thoughtful, supportive - so many other qualities. But what I remember most, is her courage to rise again like a phoenix after her aneurysm. Myself and our staff grieved her absence during the following year. A colleague and myself would visit her regularly in the rehab centre - seeing her work at milestones to recover all that the aneurysm left her with. We admired her progression during this time and the years later.
I would like to express my condolences to Rachel and her brothers and their families. May you find God's comfort and strength in the days ahead.
In loving remembrance, Hughena Ives

Dear Dorrington Clan,
I am sorry to know Joan will no longer be giving you birthday and Christmas gifts, or having you over for birthday dinners including cakes with candles. She always thought of each one of you when your special days were approaching.
She was a remarkable person who put others before herself.
Joan also had a very strong spiritual practice that could never be dimmed or extinguished. Her early mornings were spent in reading the Bible and contemplating the depths of its' teachings. Despite physical obstacles that sometimes meant an hour or more of getting dressed to go, Joan wanted to attend Sunday services and take Communion.
Her walks on Mosher's Island Road meant great exertion for her, but she understood the benefit of those walks to Amy and Tatiana (ages 5 and 1 at the time).
Subsequent to the initial brain injury, Joan experienced several significant health challenges. Whenever something new would pop up, i would suggest we change her name to Jobina. It seemed like she was being tested over and over again, but her faith never flagged, and neither did her sense of humour.
To Peter and Rachel: each of you made significant sacrifices for her. May all your kindnesses, conscientious efforts, and acts of love and devotion come back to you 1000 fold.
To all of you: my deepest condolences. She was a remarkable woman who wanted the very best lives for all of you.
Sending love and a wish for only good things to all.
Safe and easy travels to you, Joan.
p.s. Happy belated birthday, Amy.

Sorry for your loss. Beautiful picture of Joan. I met Joan when she had her aneurysm. I was a nurse at the rehab. She was such a witty, strong willed woman. She was so determined and worked very hard to get back home. You used to call me Linda Lou. A few years later she came on with a caregiver whose name happened to be Linda. She looked at me and said, she's not my Linda Lou. Great memories and time spent with this amazing women. Condolences to her family and friends. Linda Martell

My condolences to all of Joan’s family. I had the pleasure of meeting Joan about six years ago through the VON Volunteer Visiting Program. Though our ongoing weekly visits which consisted of tea, treats and great conversation, we build a wonderful friendship. Joan was a beautiful lady both inside and out and had lots of wisdom to offer. She had such grace and finesse and I admired her strength and willfulness. I will always remember the great laughs and time we shared. Also, to Harley, who cared for his Nana with such love and compassion, I know how much that meant to her. My heart is saddened for your loss. May God bless all of you at this time.

To Joan's family,
I joined Sacred Heart School as Director of Finance and Administration shortly before your dad's passing, and it was the best employment decision I ever made. Joan was the best boss ever--sweet, tough, compassionate, understanding, supportive, congenial, fair, along with being the consummate professional educational administrator and leader. The school thrived under her leadership. I cannot say enough about how she supported me in my professional and personal life. She was my boss, but she was also my friend--a rare combination. For me, the job and the school were never the same after your mom's illness. I missed her so much. I still do.
My sincere condolences on her passing. She has joined her beloved Peter, and if I know Joan, they will be dancing through their afterlife, and looking down on all of their loved ones with pride and joy.

Every once in a while you meet someone who strikes you as being EXCEPTIONAL. Joan was that person for me. It was 1982 when we first met while enrolling our daughter for Primary at the Sacred Heart. It was like walking into a little den of serenity. Mrs Dorrington met us, showed us around and took our daughter off for an interview..... She was in-charge but in a serene, confident and pleasing manner, a preview of what we were to experience for the next 13 years.
As the years passed I witnessed her amazing ability to address every situation, whether they be legal, personnel, student, finance or volunteer issues head on in a fair and consistent manner. I served on only one committee with her though, but somehow and later on, she suggested it would be good for me to volunteer at the then Bayer's Road Shopping Center to wrap Christmas Gifts on behalf of the school. I remember that well because just at closing time a young man and his friend asked me to wrap this very large aquarium he had bought for his girlfriend....lol
When looking back, this little woman, though small in stature cast a huge shadow and positively affected all those she came in contact with. Even the aneurysm did not dampen her spirit. Unknowingly she was a true hero in every sense of the word and her legacy as an educator will continue forever. GOD BLESS

To the family of Mrs. Dorrington. I got to know Mrs. Dorrington when my daughter attended the Sacred Heart School starting in primary grade. We immediately became friends and would talk often about life in general and the school. I saw her as a compassionate and caring educator. She was always open to new ideas, especially if they benefited the students. I volunteered at the school many times and Mrs Dorrington always showed her appreciation. I am very saddened by the loss of this amazing lady. I was really sorry when she had the bleed in the brain aneurysm but she was so strong that she was able to get back on her feet with hard work. My heartfelt condolences to family and friends. May her soul rest in peace and all those who cared for her, the strength to bear the loss. Om shanti
