Robert (Archie) MacAulay
Robert (Archie) MacAulay passed away November 7th at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Dad was born in Port Morien in 1933 to the late Robert and Anna MacAulay. The family moved to Number 11, Glace Bay in the 1940’s.
Dad met Mom when he was 17. They married in 1957 and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this past summer. Dad’s first career was in the military. He served at postings throughout Canada, a year with the United Nations in Egypt, ending with a post in Germany.
Upon his return to Canada, he worked with Martin Equipment in Sydney. His last working years were spent with the Commissionaires.
Archie’s retirement brought great joy, and he absolutely loved being a grandfather. Dad loved babies and as they grew up, he took his role seriously. Moms and Tots, Kindergym, hockey, swimming, music, Dad chauffeured the children to their activities and stayed to encourage them. Their fun was his fun, be it curling, football, hockey, rugby, or theatre. He followed his great-grandchildren from afar. He lived for their photos and stories. Dad loved the holidays and summertime when everyone came home, and he could be surrounded by his favorite people.
Dad made some great friends during his time with the IOOF (Oddfellows) He loved to watch baseball and hockey.
Dad is survived by his devoted wife Erma, children Cathy MacAulay-Spencer (Art) of Glace Bay, Donald MacAulay (Pam) of PEI and Karen Gerard (Brian) of Manitoba. He will be missed by his grandchildren Liam (Katherine), Colin (Gabriela), Neil (Emily), Anna, Brechan (Jennifer), Jehnna (Zack), Carli (Taylor), Parker (Carlene) and great grandchildren William, Angus, Emmett, Alexis, Samuel, Theodore, Max, Autumn, and Millie. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Johnson and Roberta Rolf.
Along with his parents Archie was predeceased by his brothers Stuart and Donald.
Archie was an avid reader and donations to the Cape Breton Regional Library would be appreciated. The family would also welcome donations to The VON (Victorian Order of Nurses) who treated Dad comfortably at home the last few years.
