Obituary of Melvin William DeYoung

Melvin William DeYoung, 73, passed away unexpectedly on October 29th, 2023, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Melvin was the second eldest of six children of the late Bill (William) and Louise DeYoung in Sydney on May 29, 1950. He met his wife, Jeannine, and they were married in 1973 surrounded by friends and family. By 1984, Melvin had moved to Ontario and had two children. Completing his education and continuing in the trades, he worked very hard to make sure his family was taken care of. Melvin wore many titles: husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. He enjoyed watching hockey and baseball with his wife, loved hunting and fishing, and was a social butterfly. He enjoyed playing cards on Friday nights with his friends and he would do anything for anyone. He worked at Lanes Bowling Alley and was honored to be a member of the 55 Seniors Club in Membertou. He was very proud to be Mi’kmaw . Melvin is predeceased in death by his mom (Louise), father (Bill) and sister (Elaine). He is survived by his wife, Jeannine DeYoung; his children, Melanie (Charlie Hill) and William DeYoung; his brother, Davey Gabereau (Pauline); sisters, Donna Gaberial, Sandra DeYoung and Debbie Grace (Raymond) and grandchildren, Mikel and Emily Hill. He will be greatly missed by many. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, 902-539-7175. Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, November 4, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm and Sunday, November 5, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held on Monday, November 6 at 11 am in St. Marguerite Bourgeoys with Fr. Bill Burke officiating followed by a Salite at the Trade and Convention Center in Membertou.
