Obituary of Wayne Stewart MacAskill

Wayne Stewart MacAskill, 76, of Howie Centre, passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Prime Brook on December 22, 1946, he was the son of the late Neil and Sadie MacAskill (MacQueen), Wayne was an active athlete playing baseball, hockey and bowling. He enjoyed many sports teams and leagues while working at The Cape Breton Post and his long career at Canada Post until his retirement in 2006. A dedicated little league coach for many years, he took pride in sharing his love of the game. Later in life, he enjoyed reconnecting with former players who now raise children of their own. A busy do-it-yourselfer, Wayne could often be seen taking pride in his yard or heading to the rink to enjoy his retirement years. Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Elaine (Rankin), sons Devin (Natalie) of Sydney, Derrick (Mary) of Montana, and daughter Lauralee (John Paul) of Halifax, sister Anne Gallivan of Sydney, brother Junior (Joanne) of Hamilton, sister-in-law Dianne of Sydney, and sister-in-law Norma of Westmount. He will be greatly missed by his beloved grandchildren Spencer, Teagan, Bailey, Jessie, Sadie and Caleb and step-granddaughter Emma. Wayne was predeceased by his sister-in-law Irene as well as his brothers and closest friends, Angus and Harvey MacAskill. Visitation will be held on Friday October 13 from 1-3pm at TJ Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney (902-539-7175), with a memorial service to follow at 3pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. A reception to follow.
