Douglas Wayne Cathcart, 73
Port Morien, NS
It is with profound grief, that we announce the passing of a husband, father, grandfather, volunteer, mentor, and friend, Douglas Wayne Cathcart (73) on July 19, 2023, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a short illness.
Married for 49 years to his loving and devoted wife Brenda (Thomas) Cathcart, they raised two sons, Christian (Linda) and Brendan (Brandi). Dougie was grandfather to Catherine Jane Cathcart and Beckett Douglas Cathcart who were his most precious gifts.
Dougie worked for years in construction and as a fisherman. He worked with some great people like Eddie Tracey, and master fishermen, Tom MacDonald, and Stuart Nicholson. Dougie put years into volunteering with the Passchendale Police Boys and Girls Club, helping to mentor the youth of the area while serving as an active member of the Port Morien Fire Department for 47 years. Dougie felt honoured to serve with the men and women of the company.
Dougie was a big fan of drag races, his morning coffee mates LOL, the Maple Leaf’s, and driving his ‘74 Nova.
Dougie is survived by wife Brenda, sons - Christian (Linda) and Brendan (Brandi), grandchildren - Catherine Jane and Beckett Douglas, mother-in-law Elizabeth (Fortune) Thomas (100) as well as brother David Brown and sisters Kelly MacIntyre and Ruth Acre.
Dougie was predeceased by parents David and Bessie (MacIntosh) Cathcart, sisters June MacAulay, Helen Gallant, Annie Butts, and Margaret Brown. Brothers David, Glenny, Earl Cathcart, and Shawn Brown. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and best friend Stuart Nicholson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 31 at 10:30 a.m. in T.J. Tracey Funeral Home, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay.902-849-4199, with Father Norman MacPhee presiding. Interment will take place at a later date in St. Mary’s Cemetery Port Morien.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Port Morien Fire Dept., Cape Breton Red Cross, or to a charity of your choice.
