Obituary of Bertha Kennedy

Bertha Lillian (Barro) Kennedy, 84, Glace Bay, N.S. It is with great sorrow that we the family announce the peaceful passing of Bertha Lillian (Barro) Kennedy on April 27, 2023, in Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, N.S. Born in Glace Bay, N.S. She was the daughter of the late Florence (Timmons) and Cyril Barro of Port Morien. Bertha grew up in Port Morien. She worked in her dad’s convenience/grocery store (Barro’s Lucky Dollar Store). She loved to do crafts such as embroidery and plastic canvas. She also loved to cook Italian dishes and to bake. Everyone loved her homemade bread! Mom was known for her kindness and generosity and for always helping others. She was affectionately known as “Big Mama” by all the neighbourhood kids that she loved to feed and care for. She always had a ready smile, positivity, and a great sense of humour. Mom loved to spend time with family and to decorate and celebrate all holidays, especially Christmas! She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Lenore Kennedy (Sydney, N.S.). Two sisters: Eileen Pettipas (Ontario) and Florence (Ted) Butts (Birch Grove). She is also survived by her pride and joy, her only granddaughter Arianna McKinnon and her two sisters-in-law, Pauline Barro and Valerie Barro. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 33 years, Ewen Elwood Kennedy and an infant daughter, Thelma Darlene Kennedy. Her brothers Harold “Baba” Barro and Cyril “Sonny” Barro and her sister and best friend, Thelma “Seddie” Wilson. As per Bertha’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Interment will also be at a later date, in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay, N.S. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to palliative care or to a charity of one’s choice. Bertha’s family would like to offer a sincere thank you to all the staff at Victoria Haven Nursing Home for the excellent care they have provided for mom during the six years she was in care. We appreciate your many kindnesses and always going above and beyond for mom! We would also like to thank mom’s close friend, Patsy Mills, for always visiting mom and being a great friend throughout the years. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J.
