On March 16, 2023, my brother, John Ryan "JR" MacTaggart tragically passed away. Although he was acutely aware of the anguish that his final action would inflict on those who cherished and loved him dearly, the torment of living, proved to be much more profound.
Those of us fortunate enough to ever feel his selfless love are also fortunate enough to never forget it. Boundless and overflowing, his care for his family and close friends poured from a heart so large, it barely fit into any of his Matthew Good t-shirts.
I'd like to share an excerpt from a text I had with my brother on September 14th, 2021, regarding the passing of one of our favorite comedians, Norm MacDonald...
I wrote...
"Is it selfish to leave without saying goodbye in these kinda tragedies? I'm confused."
His response was...
"Dang, hard G, haha."
"I don't think so. David Bowie was an all of a sudden poof, adios. If you just wanna go without making people deal with it for years I can't say that's selfish at all. Also saves having to read all those sad messages."
"I'm against the whole announcing retirement as of "the end of next season" in the sports world so that's where my opinion comes from."
"Everybody come see me before I retire. Every team I play against for the last time, do a thing to tribute me (obviously you have to have been a GREAT player to garner that)."
"He just wanted to make people laugh, not cry so I guess I understand based on that. That's my 2 cents."
"I also have a weird thing about how people always talk about the dead as the greatest, funniest, most generous etc etc. I mean it's not the time to talk about how they were a d*** but so much of it is bs that to just go out without asking (in a way) for attention during that last year is a sign of humility."
My brother endured tremendous suffering and was determined to spare others from even the slightest of pains. I believe this is where his motivation stemmed from to provide us all with such joy and laughter; though he himself may not have ever fully realized his true selflessness in such acts.
Though we both love and know our stand-up comedy well, I can undeniably say that his blend of silly, dry, dad, and at many times, darker styles of humor were unequivocally unique to him and I am convinced that it emerged as a stunning consequence of his troubled mental state, to which he then outwardly directed so purposely and positively. Words cannot express how he managed to consistently toe the rubber of comedy in such blowout losses all these years. His strength and commitment is beyond comprehension.
I have still yet to say I've ever known a soul quicker or funnier than my brother; and that's quite the ribbon pinned when you have an Uncle Ernie! Truly, another beautiful comedic mind taken from the world much too soon. Striving to bring warmth (that face) and laughter to everyone he encountered, those who were fortunate enough to share in his humor, please be forever welcome.
John Ryan was my stand-up brother, who stood up for all yet never sought for spotlight or accolades. So now, now is the time for John Ryan to take his well-deserved bow.
So Brosif, we are all standing and watching in ovation. Forever grateful for what you gave to us. Forever grateful for the lasting memories you created for us. Forever grateful for how you will be remembered to us. So please. Finally please. Take your bow.
Always and forever. So dearly loved and remembered. My cherished brother, John Ryan. Rest in peace, Brasifarian.

My love and thoughts are with Teresa and everyone in the Buote/MacTaggart families. John Ryan was kind, charming and funny and I always enjoyed the chance to catch up with him. I first met him almost 25 years ago when I was a nanny for his younger cousins. He came to stay with the family for a bit and we had some great in-depth conversations. I found him very insightful for his relatively young age at the time. The world has lost a lovely soul. I have always loved this photo I took of him with his Aunt Pauline at a bonfire on PEI a decade or so ago, so I thought I would share it. He had the greatest smile and I know his family was very important to him. You are missed John Ryan.

Where to start. I’ve procrastinated writing this just like I did with hanging out with J.R. We’ve had plans for probably a year to grab some food. First he wasn’t up for it, then I was busy then the pizza place he suggested closed lol. Fast forward to today and I’m writing on your memorial wall. Where did our friendship start? About 17.5 years ago when I joined CIBC. He was always a cool ginger (not like me a regular short ginger). We always joked about our red hair and receding hairlines. To the point we both shaved our heads. I tried to hang onto my hairline a bit longer than he did. He was known for his button up dress shirts and blue polos. I was known for my hoodies and getting in trouble with the dress code. We often worked on the same team or at least in the same department. He was such a funny and fun person to be around. Dry jokes like many have already shared. I tried many times to get him to buy a Porsche and stop taking the bus. Sadly it was out of both of our price range. Until I found one on marketplace. $4,000.00 but it didn’t run or drive lol but he could own his dream car at least. He helped me through a low time in my life which advice about mental health and not to give up on finding the right councillor. Taking to a doctor to make sure I treat my mental health as important as any other health issue. After leaving the department I’d often check in on him and he’d do the same. Chatting about his workout routine and diet, how my kids were doing. Oh I forgot his love of the charcoal bbq where he’d whip up his creations. His grandmother who lived on the island which he cared for a lot. His dad and siblings in Ontario (including his brother who wired up some amazing stereo’s) his mom who was in the funeral business like my family was and a special uncle in Bedford. He had some amazing friends who ensured he knew how amazing he was and some who regret not telling him more often. A ton of co-worked who clearly knew how special he was. To know J.R was to love him. To his family, try and find some comfort in knowing how special he was to us and we appreciate the time we spent with him. ❤️

My sincere condolences and thoughts and prayers go to JR's family and friends. I worked with JR at CIBC for many years and it was an absolute pleasure to speak and be with him daily. I will look back fondly on our chats on his 49ers, A's, and what we got at Mary's Bakery when we were on vacation in PEI. He was a wonderful, truly authentic person and it was an honor to have called him a friend. I will miss him greatly.

JR and I worked many years together at CIBC, he was always a perfect gentleman and made you laugh! We often compared cooking techniques, recipes and the results! He was always ready to lend an ear, offer a kind word or any support you may have needed in that moment. I remember his strict diet, and vigorous work outs when he applied to become an RCMP officer. I'd tease him, 'you'll be the best looking man in that uniform JR, I'd let you arrest me'; enter JR's special shade of red. You leave a huge void behind JR but, I am better for having known you than never meeting you at all. My condolences to everyone who had the honor to know JR, most importantly to his family, may you find comfort knowing how many lives JR enriched just by being JR. Rest easy buddy.

I am saddened by the news of J.R.'s passing. My dearest and deepest condolences on the passing J.R. I could always count on him to make jokes during team meetings, which seemed to make his fellow teammates laugh along. J.R. easily adopted my "welcome to work/Thanks for your work", take at the beginning of each shift and at the end of the day. His high fives were full of tenacity and vigour! I will never forget how positive J.R. was, even in the face of uncertainty. J.R. was so very pleasant to work with. We enjoyed many conversations around his love of sports, as he would try and convince me that it was great to watch, even on TV. It was probably a tactic on his part to make my coaching sessions more fun for him than me. I will also never forget how easy it was to make him blush his special colour of red. J.R. will be missed by his fellow team members at CIBC, and he was a welcomed addition to my team.

JR and I spent my first couple of years in Halifax side by side. I loved him. And still do. In a city where I didn't know anyone, he took me on a first date, that to this day, was and likely will ever be, the best first date. From that moment forward, we clicked and created a little space in the world that was only ours. He treated me to surprise homemade baked goodies at work, made me gourmet dinners in his bachelor apartment kitchen, took road trips to Masstown Market on Saturday mornings, bantered about football until one of us eventually gave in and he always made me feel like the only girl in the room. Begrudgingly I would watch endless hours of his car shows, but secretly loving it because it brought him so much joy. We woke up early to snuggle in bed and watch The Tour de France, and I eventually got him to cave in and "cheat" on his diet most days. His homemade salad dressing recipe that I 'borrowed' is still a big hit at my dinner parties. While our romantic relationship ended, our friendship, love and admiration for one another did not. Losing him has a profound effect on all of the people in his life, and for me, it hurts on a deep level. I love you and miss you John Ryan. Rest easy angel xo
