Please share a memory of Constance to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Constance Evelyn “Connie” Slaunwhite, age 93, of Terence Bay, passed away on February 15, 2023, at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Terence Bay, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Stella Jollimore.
Mom was a force to be reckoned with and when she made up her mind to do something, there was no stopping her. She was determined to die peacefully, at a time of her choosing and did so surrounded by her large and loving family.
Born to humble beginnings and with little formal education, she achieved and accomplished much in her life. She married Edmund at age 15 and went on to bear 10 children, also raising her niece. When dad could no longer work and with her youngest child in school, she decided she needed to get a job. Since she had a lot of experience cooking, she obtained a position in the kitchen of St. Vincent’s Guest House and later at Sears Cafeteria, retiring after 20 plus years. While working, she didn’t want to depend on others for transportation, so at age 44 got her drivers license and drove her car until shortly before she died; most times with her sidekick, Tish, in the passenger seat.
She loved being busy and had a work ethic like no other. Right up until her death she remained active cooking, cleaning, baking and was famous for her pies and cinnamon buns. She also loved gardening, planting one every year, making pickles and preserves in the fall. Berry picking was another passion; she made the best jams.
Mom enjoyed playing bingo and cards and was an avid reader. She was active in several seniors clubs over the years and loved their bus trips. She also travelled extensively including the Caribbean (first time wearing a bathing suit at age 80), New York, Florida, Maine for shopping trips and many other places in the US, as well as from one end of Canada to the other. She was always ready for the next trip.
Survived by her children, Dennis (Wanda), Kathy (Bob), Bruce, Cindy (Barry), Keith, Todd, Lynn (Marcel); and niece, Sylvia; son-in-law Stan Mellish; seventeen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren.
Predeceased by a son in infancy; husband, Dennis Edmund; daughters, Sandra and Sheila; brothers, Graham and Everett; sisters, Alice, Mabel, Carrie and Annie; daughter-in-law, Sherry; sons-in-law, Phil and Danny.
