Sadly, but mercifully, Sheldon passed away at the VG Hospital, Dec. 28, 2022, age 84. Despite having battled colon cancer, many related surgeries and covid, he succumbed to the devastation of dementia. Sheldon is survived by his wife, Linda; his loving stepdaughter, Colleen MacIntyre (Gary and their sons Owen and William) North Carolina. Sheldon also leaves behind his daughters, Wanda Hogg (Chris and their children Jillian and Alex) Dartmouth; Lisa Rochon (Marc) Lawrencetown; and Lisa Tenant (Greg and their 4 sons) Western Canada. He is also survived by sisters, Rita Campbell and Donna Arsenault (Brad); their families in Cape Breton; and Corinne Lipton (John) Dartmouth. Sheldon was predeceased by his parents, Cornelius and Rita Gillis; sister, Muriel McDonald (Ronnie); and younger brother Fred. Growing up in Glace Bay, Sheldon was a sports fan both as a competitor and spectator. His fondest memories were summers spent at the family cottage “out on the Mira”, where a good time was had by all. Sheldon always kept others around him entertained, was a bright light, a loving husband, father, Poppy, co-worker, and friend to all who had the pleasure of having him as a part of their lives. In 1960, Sheldon graduated from the 3-year RN program, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay, thus beginning his 40-year nursing career. He worked in many fields including cardiology, mental health, dockyard, medic on the Bow Valley One oil rig...St. Vincent Nursing Home to mention but a few. In short, he gave his life in service to others. Heartfelt thanks to hospitalist, Dr. Al-Aqel, the P.A.T.H., Palliative Care and Geriatric teams during Sheldon’s recent dementia illness. To the wonderful staff on 5A, the care you gave Sheldon was compassionate and genuine during this difficult time. Cremation has taken place. A private burial will take place at a later date. Funeral Service will be held at Anglican Church of the Apostles, Halifax on Thursday Jan. 5th, 2023, at 11am. Father Mark Marshall officiating. Masks required. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the church in Sheldon’s memory would be appreciated. “Grief is the price we pay for love.”
