HILTZ, Gary Joseph, Age 57, of Spryfield, passed away October 5th, 2022, at home. He was the son of the late John J. Hiltz and Phyllis A. (Hudgins) Hiltz. Gary is survived by; his son, John Hiltz; mother, Phyllis Hiltz; sister, Deborah (Hiltz) Sampson (Wayne); nieces, Julie, Megan, and Melissa; nephews, Colin, and Timothy; as well as many extended family members. He was predeceased by; his father, John J. Hiltz; sister, Eileen (Hiltz) Perry (Chris); brother, John (Jackie) Hiltz, Wayne Hiltz (Lynn); niece, Tina (Perry) Brown. Gary became an apprentice mechanic after graduating from Queen Elizabeth High School and after a number of years in his chosen field decided to try his hand at driving taxi, he was with casino taxi in Halifax for over 2 decades and enjoyed the day-to-day camaraderie with his passengers. Gary loved a challenge and took an opportunity to pursue a career as a Stevedore on the Halifax Waterfront where he remained employed until an injury and early retirement. Gary loved his community and was known to many; he always had a friendly smile and a kind word. At one time Gary was an avid bowler in a men’s pro league and a mixed league at the Spryfield Bowlarama, he loved playing shuffleboard, darts and he would never turn down a good game of cards. Especially a game whilst with his best friend Ronnie. Gary was also known for his generosity and his open-door policy for any member of his family and his friends who may pop in for a chat and a cup of coffee. Gary will be deeply missed by his son, John, and many others he met throughout his lifetime. John has also asked to those who knew Gary, to please raise a glass and toast in celebration of his life as you knew him. Cremation has taken place and John had asked for privacy and time to come to terms with his loss. No decisions have been made as to any further services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
