Alma Marie Buchanan (nee MacPherson)
June 11, 1939 – October 6, 2022
On Thursday October 6th, 2022, the world became a little duller with the peaceful passing of our mother, Alma Marie Buchanan (nee MacPherson) 83, at her home in New Waterford Heights, surrounded by her girls.
She was the daughter of the late Alfred and Marie (Ford) MacPherson. Alma was predeceased by her loving husband, Eddie in 2021, her daughter Sharon 2010, sisters Helen (Joe) McCormick, Mary Poplawski, brothers Alfred (Joan), Donald (Tina), and stepbrother Jackie MacPherson.
She is survived by her most cherished daughters, Kathy (Ira) LeFort, Nine Mile River, Margaret Ann Buchanan (Dan MacDonald), Gardiner Mines, Mary (Earl) Beaton, Mira, Edwina (Dan) Muller, Alberta, and Lisa MacKinnon, Glace Bay. Also surviving are half siblings Greg MacPherson, David (Trudy) MacPherson, Dennis MacPherson and Sheila Hopkins and family.
Her most precious grand children: Danielle (Greg) Woodworth, Christopher LeFort, Marci (Amy) Buchanan, Buchanan and Mira Beaton, Jeffrey, Liam and Jillian MacKinnon, Almanda (Coltin) Muller, Kayla Muller, Cameron (Danielle) Muller, A.J. and Michael Pittman, Eddy (Mary) Buchanan, Jonathan (Crystal) Boutilier, Samantha Boutilier.
Her great-grandchildren: Max, Logan, Noah, and Ethan Muller, Everly and Oliver Arsenault, Lainey Muller, Jace Beaton, Michael and Tori Clarke, Dylan, Brady, Brooke and Ryker Buchanan, Angel Boutilier, Jocelynn and Rylie MacDonald, Zander, Anthony and Nickolas Royal, David, Tanner and Aven Pittman. Also left to mourn is her sister-in-law, Shirley Buchanan.
Those who were fortunate enough to have called her a friend, loved one or family member can attest: Alma was genuine, loving, behind her feisty, “blue eyes” and there was an incredible zest for life. She was never afraid to stick up for “the little guy” and was generous to others less fortunate.
Born on June 11, 1939, in Glace Bay, Alma spent her childhood on Beacon Street raised by her Mama and Papa (Kay & Jimmy Ford) from the age of one after her mother (Marie) passed away. She met the love of her life Eddie, and they were married on September 14, 1956. Alma and Eddie cherished the memories of raising their six girls.
Our mother was never one to back down from a challenge, a new adventure, or – most importantly to her – meeting new friends; she had friends in more places than we can count.
As a mother, she always did her best for her six girls. Our home when we were young was the central hub of activity; friends were welcome anytime for a quick hang-out.
In her earlier years, Alma was employed with St. Joseph’s Hospital (The Community Hospital) and then the General Hospital as ward clerk, for the Emergency Department until her retirement.
To the staff at New Waterford Heights, 3rd floor, you will always have a special place in our hearts for the love, care, and compassion you have shown our mother the past year and us, her girls. You truly are devoted to your profession.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.J. Tracey’s Funeral Home, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199. Eddie and Alma’s life will be remembered and celebrated on Thursday, October 13, 2022, where the family will receive friends for visitation and sharing of memories from 5-7 pm and Friday, October 14, 2022, at 10-11 am, funeral service will be at 11 am to celebrate the life of our parents.

Don’t weep for me
I’m no longer here,
I’ve a date with a
butterfly to dance in the air.
I’ll be singing in the
sunshine, wild and free
playing tag with the wind
while I’m watching over thee.
We love you mother. Be at peace.
Edward Cameron Buchanan, Glace Bay
April 17th, 1938 – July 20th, 2021
Many people will walk in and out of your life – only a few special ones will leave footprints in your heart – that describes our Eddie. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a loving husband, proud father of his six girls, papa, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, brother-in-law, and dear, dear friend.
Eddie passed away peacefully, with loved ones by his side, at the Glace Bay Hospital, on Tuesday, July 20th, 2021, at the age of 83. Born in Glace Bay, Eddy was the son of the late William and Etta (Cameron) Buchanan.
In his earlier years, Eddie was employed with the Point Edward Naval Base and co-owned Caledonia Auto Sales with his brother Jimmy. He was employed at the Sydney/Glace Bay Airport as a Fire Officer for over 30 years until his retirement.
Eddie is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Alma Marie (MacPherson); daughters, Kathy (Ira) Lefort, Nine Mile River, Margaret Anne (Dan), Gardiner Mines, Mary (Earl) Beaton, Mira, Edwina (Dan) Muller, Strathmore, Alberta, and Lisa MacKinnon, Glace Bay.
His precious grandchildren: Danielle (Greg) Woodworth, Christopher Lefort, Marci (Amy) Buchanan, Buchanan and Mira Beaton, Jeffrey, Liam, and Jillian MacKinnon, Almanda (Coltin) Muller, Kayla (Dylan) Muller, Cameron (Danielle) Muller, A.J. and Michael Pittman, Eddy (Mary) Buchanan, Jonathan (Crystal) Boutilier, Samantha (Stephen) Boutilier.
Great Grandchildren: Jace Beaton, Michael and Tori Clarke, Dylan, Brady, Brooke, and Ryker Buchanan, Angel, Jocelynn and Rylie Boutilier, Max, Logan, Noah, and Ethan Muller, Everly and Baby Oli Arsenault, Zander, Anthony and Nickolas Royal, David, Tanner and Aven Pittman. Also Left to mourn is his sister-in-law, Shirley Buchanan.
Besides his parents, William, and Etta, he was predeceased by his daughter, Sharon Boutilier; brothers, Jimmy (Edna), Junior (Jean), Aubrey, Wally (Shirley), Eric; sisters, Margaret (Austin), Hattie (Percy), Lorraine (George), Norma (Allister) and Eva.
In his life he brought all his friends and family joy and laughter, which they will greatly miss. Those who knew him loved him deeply. Whether it was selling cars, ski-dooing with the kids and his nephews, taking his family on road trips (even had room for Grandma to come along). Eddie was a jokester, a good friend, a wonderful dad and loving, devoted husband. He had to borrow a pair of shoes to get married in as he had only work boots and sneakers. He could tell stories about all his adventures with Junior, Jimmy, Wally, and Aubrey, you were never safe around them. Eddie’s passing leaves a void that is keenly felt by all and impossible to fill.
Father: Your love, your patience, your understanding, your wisdom, and your amazing sense of humor will live on inside us forever. You have given us gifts that are more precious than anything in this world. Goodbye, Father. You will always live on in the hearts of your “6 little girls”.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.J. Tracey’s Funeral Home, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199. A limb has fallen
from the family tree,
that says please do not
grieve for me.
Remember the Best Times,
the laughter, the song,
the Good Life I lived
while I was strong.
