I am very sorry to hear of Gil’s passing, He was a lovely guy who showed that differences of opinion didn’t need to lead to negativity and ill-feeling.. He always went out of his way to be principled but at the same time inclusive and respectful. He had a more free market position on trade policies than I did, but always took time to understand my focus on social aspects and labour adjustment and to share good ideas and suggestions. He was always a warm and encouraging presence around the department; and amazingly proud of his children and grandchildren as well. He will be sorely missed. My since condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Dear, Linda and the Winham family,
Gil was an inspirational professor, mentor and friend to me for more than twenty-five years. My undergraduate experience at Dalhousie was profoundly enriched because of the time that I spent in Gil’s classroom and under his research supervision. After my time at Dalhousie, I greatly enjoyed and benefited from his friendship as a skiing and fondue companion, fellow news junkie, fan of the Daily Show and source of sage advice and great stories. I will miss him terribly.
I deeply regret that I will not be able to pay Gil my final respects at today’s services, but my thoughts will be with you, your family and Gil all day, from afar.
On behalf of Lisa and our family, please accept our heartfelt condolences.

Gil was a regular participant in Noon-Hour Hockey at Dalhousie, and many of us remember him for his more-than-competent athletic ability, great personality, and gentlemanly demeanor. We knew he was a political scientist with an international reputation, but he fit right in with the rest of us. He loved the game, and we valued his contributions both on and off the ice. I’m saddened to learn of Prof Gil Winham’s passing. He was my teacher at McMaster University and then at Dalhousie University. I recall him challenging us to read all of the volumes of Arnold Tonybee’s work. He was a wonderful and king mentor. May he Rest In Peace.

very sad news. Gil was a fine scholar, engaged teacher, and generous colleague. Among his many achievements, his outstanding book on the Tokyo Round remains an exemplar of theoretically informed and empirically rich trade scholarship.

Dear Linda and Family,
My heartfelt condolences to all of you on losing a spouse, father, and grandfather.
I do not need to tell you how much respect and admiration he commanded from his colleagues at Dalhousie.
Our paths crossed regularly there in faculty meetings, committee work, and the like.
Gil stood out clearly for me as someone who was constantly cooperative and genuinely helpful at all times and above all a genuine human being.
Our dean, the late Roland Smith, was not someone given to praise and compliments, but I once heard him describe Gil as “a star.”

Please accept our family’s condolences for your loss. Graham and I remember Gil fondly. He was a great storyteller in his own right and seemingly simple conversations with him were an opportunity to learn and be enriched.
All our best,

I am very sorry to hear this sad news. It just reached me at my home in Montreal. Gil was a very supportive colleague and also became a friend after I began teaching at Dalhousie Law School in 1990. We worked together on a number of projects and co-supervised many grad students over 20+ years. My sympathies to the family.

Dear Linda,
Gil and I had some great discussions over the many years we were both at Dal, even if we somehow did not quite manage to solve all of the world’s problems. Listening to him when he would guest on CBC radio’s morning talk show, explaining to Don Tremaine and everyone else what was behind some current headlines, was always an eyeopener. And Irma and I were always happy to see him at the Finn society get-togethers. Your care for him as we talked, matter-of-factly supplying memories he could no longer readily access, was very impressive. Of course you have our sympathy, but also our admiration.

RIP Gil, aka Prof. Winham. Gil was a mentor, friend, and in later years, a colleague. I learned a great deal from him inside the classroom and out. One of my favorite memories of Gil was that he played shortstop for our Graduate Political Science Intramural softball team at Dalhousie. This was in the Spring of 1987, when Gil was 48. I remember at the time marvelling at his athletic ability for ‘such a geezer’! We also played pick-up hockey together at Dal. A healthy body and a healthy mind: no one epitomized that saying more than Prof. Winham. My sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Linda and family.
Cindy shared the sad news of Gil’s passing. I am so very sorry for your loss. Those times I visited your home, I always had the sense of warmth and welcoming that only comes when there is a real partnership, a family, inhabiting it. You always spoke of Gil with warmth and admiration, how fortunate you were to have so many years and what a hole that will be now. Take care.
