Please share a memory of Marjorie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marjorie Helena Young, age 95, at the Queen Elizabeth 11 hospital in Halifax, N.S. on July 31, 2022. Born in Halifax on January 11,1927 and raised in Hatchet Lake, she was the fourth eldest of 13 children born to Lester and Mary Hilda (Brommet) Umlah. She worked at Sears in Halifax before her marriage to Robert Young in 1952. She stayed at home to raise her family for several years, going back to work seasonally at Sears until she joined Bob in running the Shell service station and canteen in Hatchet Lake. They were both well known in the community. Bob and Marjorie loved to travel. They had many excursions down south and during retirement they travelled within Canada and abroad. They looked forward to weekends at the cottage in the summer where they enjoyed boating, card games and visits from family and friends. Marjorie enjoyed painting and gardening and was an excellent cook and an accomplished knitter. She was a spirited, devoted, and loyal wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be greatly missed. Marjorie loved children and one of her greatest joys came from spending time with her grandchildren: James, Jason, and Jared. “Nanny” as her grandchildren called her, loved to make cookies, pies, jams, jellies, bottled peaches, and pickles of which the aroma during the autumn in her house could knock you over. The boys especially liked the dill pickles. She was always up for going swimming and berry picking with them and could sometimes be found sharing a freezer pop with them on the back porch. Marjorie is survived by children, Shirley Dalziel (Hugh) and Wayne Young; grandchildren, James (Jennifer) Dalziel, Jason (Stephanie) Dalziel, Jared Dalziel; great grandchildren, William Dalziel, Isla Dalziel; sister, Barbara Ripley. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Young; brothers, Warren Umlah, Gordon Umlah, Lester Umlah, Jack Umlah, Donald Umlah, Harold Umlah; sisters, Rita Osborne, Joan Young, Marion Umlah, Shirley Umlah, and Gladys Umlah. A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, August 26, 2022, at 11:00am at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, 2320 Prospect Road, Hatchet Lake, NS. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
