To Mary and all of Ben & Mary's family, we want you to know we are very sorry for your loss. We shared so many great times together, going back to the early 60's when we worked at RBC Royal Bank; Ben at Gottingen Street branch and George at Morris & Barrington Streets. A few of our many memories include the fact both our immediate families were created at almost the same time, one Daughter and two Sons in each case. Another memory comes quickly to mind, that of our enjoyment of similar music. Specifically, Ben & George were two of Tom T Hall's biggest fans. There is so much more, just to that story alone, but it can be told at another time. Becoming neighbors in the little Winter Haven 'village' in Florida within the past dozen years was like icing on the cake. We are so sad to hear of your loss and we send you our sincere condolences. GEORGE & CAROL ANN FANCEY, MIDDLETON NS.

Uncle Ben was the king of nicknames. As a kid, he nicknamed me the “Golden Girl” because I always seemed to be winning in my various sports/activities.
Well, Uncle Ben, I indeed won the gold having an uncle as wonderful as you.

To Ben's family, please accept my deepest sympathy on his passing.
Ben was one of a kind. That comes out very clearly from his remarkable obituary. I had the privilege of getting to know Ben when he was serving as a municipal councillor at Halifax County and I was County solicitor. I, like many others, developed enormous respect for Ben - his quick mind, his character, his low key style and his wicked sense of humour. When Ben said something, it was thoughtful and straight to the point. When he committed to something, you could take it to the bank. We became friends and I treasure that. I well recall how important his family was to him. Again, my very best to you all.

Ben was my boss 30+ years ago at National Bank in Dartmouth. I always admired his "call it as I see it" manner. He didn't mince words with anyone. Several years later I ran into Ben when he became a politician. If only all politicians had his straight forwardness, things would be much simpler. I had much respect for Ben. He was one of a kind.
At this time, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the Bates family.

So very sorry to hear of Ben’s passing. He was always, to us, a very quiet and loving family man; he always seemed so proud of his wife and children. Our sincere condolences to all.
