age 89, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2022, in Halifax after a long journey with dementia. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Frederick and Ruth (DeWolfe) Allen. Reg had two careers, the first with Imperial Oil for 35 years and the second as the Chair and General Manager of the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia for 8 years. During his time at the Workers’ Compensation Board, Reg served as the President of the International Association of Industrial Boards and Commissions. Reg had great civic pride. He served as a Halifax County Councillor, Halifax City Alderman and was Deputy Mayor of Halifax in 1969. He was also a member of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party and was the campaign manager for his good friend, John Buchanan, when he became Premier in 1978. Reg gave freely of his time and wisdom by sitting on numerous boards, commissions, and associations. He was the Chair of the Halifax Regional School Board, Chair of the Roman Catholic Archdiocesan Pastoral Council (Halifax), Chair of the Halifax/Dartmouth Bridge Commission, President of the Better Business Bureau of Nova Scotia, President of the Arthritis Society of Nova Scotia, and many other organizations. Upon retirement, Reg enjoyed golf, gardening, and spending time with his ever-growing family. Reg enjoyed his grandchildren immensely and they all enjoyed Grandad’s paydays! Reg is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan (Beanlands); his son, Reg Jr.; and his daughters, Susan (Robert MacLellan), Janice (Geno Pace), Tracey (Andy Margison), and Ginny (Don Crawley). He is survived by 10 grandchildren, Laura Allen (Angela Morash), Ben Allen (Deanna), Abby MacLellan (Mitch Liberatore), Amanda Nolan (Shane), Danielle Pace (Scott Tucker), Matthew Margison (Sarah O’Brien), Meredith Margison, Emma Crawley (Kyle Piercey), Lauren Parkinson (Alex), and Allie Peters (Matt). Reg is survived by eight great-granchildren, James and Lily Allen, Brielle and Brynlee Nolan, Mya Tucker, Zoey Margison, Blake Parkinson, and Mila Peters. Reg is also survived by his brother, Tim (Norma) Allen; and sister, Carolyn (David) Conrad, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Reg is predeceased by his brothers, Frederick, Russell, Vernon and John; and sisters, Madeliene Brown, Jean Vaillancourt and Barbara Hayter. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, June 16, 2022, 1:00pm at St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax. The family requests that masks be worn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
