The children of Hugh Joseph MacKinnon are sad to announce his passing on Friday, May 20, 2022, at home with his family by his side after a battle with cancer. Born in 1940 on French Road, Grand Mira Hugh was the son of the late Michael ‘Mickey’ and Margaret (Gillis) MacKinnon.
Together with his wife Edith, they lived in Glace Bay and raised their four children, Keith (Janie) of Bedford, Donna (Dave) MacKinnon, Cathy (Blaise) Barrett and Elizabeth (Daniel) Burns all of Glace Bay. Proud Poppa to 14 grandchildren, David, Michael and Laura MacKinnon, Jillian, Alex, Ryan and Jenna Gass, Brianna and Jillian MacKeigan, Callie Barrett, Jessica MacNeil, Katie and Abbie Munden and James Jury. Also 7 great grand children, Waylon Zwicker, Reed MacNeil, Ally and Erik Jury, Sebastian Plichie, Jonah, and his special little girl Norah Edith McNeil.
Hugh is also survived by his brothers Simon (Jackie), John (Bin), Russell (Lucy), Rannie (Marla), all of Sydney, Michael (Tricia) Milford and sister Ann (Charles) Rogers of Calgary, sister-in-law Ann Gallivan and special friend Patsy Morrison. Many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his wife, Edith in 2007, two children in infancy, parents Michael and Margaret MacKinnon, in-laws Alex and Joan Penman, brother Leo MacKinnon, brothers-in-law Dennis Gallivan, Alex (Eleanor) and James (Delores) Penman.
Hugh had a long career as a meat cutter at David’s, Gillis’s and eventually retired in 2006 from Co-op in Ashby where he was deli manager. Proud 3rd Degree Knight and Warden of council 1953 Knights of Columbus, volunteer with Meals on Wheels and Special Olympics. He enjoyed his daily trips to Branch 3 Legion and was a lifelong Maple Leaf’s fan.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Monday, May 23 from 9-10 a.m. with a service to follow at 10: 00 am with Fr. Daniel Boudreau, all taking place at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St, Glace Bay, N.S. (902) 849-4199. Burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
