Dear Helen and family,
I was very saddened to hear the news about Marty. My wife Vallee and I send our sincere condolences along to you and your family on your loss. Don MacNeill was kind enough to forward the information to me.
Marty and I were good friends back during our Dalhousie days and shared many experiences together. He was a fun guy to be with and was a natural when it came to getting along with people.
I recall one memory of the two of us accelerating our cars (he in his Ford Fairlane and me in my Plymouth Fury) side by side, for about a couple of blocks on Oxford St. in Halifax on a quiet afternoon. Young foolishness to see whose car was faster. Fortunately, conditions were in our favor for this brief indiscretion and no one was injured. I think he may have been the faster one but both of us chose not to press our luck for more than a few seconds. There are many more memories, perhaps less audacious, of enjoyable time spent with him which will always bring a smile to my face when I think of Marty.
In a similar way, I hope the many pleasurable memories you have of Marty will help you through this difficult time. I know he will be missed.
Sincerely,
Dave Shatford (Alliston, Ontario)
