John Bartholomew (Bart) Oliver Reserve Mines It is with broken hearts we announce the death of John Bartholomew (Bart) Oliver on April 9, 2022. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, wife of 55 years Bernadette (McGuigan), son Kevin (Paula) and daughter Susan (Pascal). Born in Reserve Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, he was the first son of the late John Oliver and Margaret “Moxie” McMullin, and a loving older brother to Wayne (Ethel), Cotter (Margie), Dwight (Nadine), Blaine 'Jack' (Flo), Brad (Colleen) and his little sissy Sharon (Russ). He was predeceased by his brother Cyril (Rebecca). He was a devoted grandfather to Andrew, Keir, and Lucy. “Buddy” taught his grandchildren to appreciate special moments, spend time in nature, and treat others kindly. He was adored by his grandchildren, and he adored them. He was unconditional love personified. Bart loved to travel and explored forty countries and five continents with his one and only love Bernadette. He loved to dance and laugh and was always the life of the party. He loved to learn and took classes well into his seventies. It was common knowledge that “Bart knew everything.” Bart was the most generous and giving person, a true man of service. He served his country in the Canadian Coast Guards. He served his community as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kinsmen Club and Royal Canadian Legion. He was a faithful member of the St. Jean Vianney Parish in Lower Sackville where he lived for 45 years raising his family, before moving back to Cape Breton three years ago. Special thanks to the staff at Parkland Cape Breton and Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney, Nova Scotia, where Bart spent his last years. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Parish in Reserve Mines on Wednesday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Society of Canada (PSPCAN). Arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199. Words of comfort may be expressed to the family by visiting www.tjtracey.com.
