If it is true that “when an old man dies, a library is lost,” the passing of “The Darb” is on par with the destruction of Alexandria. A titan who could speedtalk his way through the most daunting of topics, making it at once comprehensible, entertaining, and at times hilarious. Peter embodied the best of the Weldon tradition, taking the “open door” to levels rarely seen before or since. “Darby is God” was our mantra. Thank you for everything.

I did not know Professor Darby well but I wanted to pass on the condolences of the Marquis family from Saint John, NB. My later father, Henry Marquis, became a partner of Gordon Willett. I have heard from friends who attended Dalhousie law school that Peter Darby was a superb professor. My mother Agnes Marquis also sends her condolences to the Darby family.

I knew Mr. Darby as a labour arbitrator when working in the Grievance and Adjudication Section, scheduling grievance hearings, at PSAC in Ottawa, for over 35 years. (I retired in 2017]. I often had the opportunity to speak to him on the phone as he was not on email and did not like fax machines too much. Summertime I would talk to him and sometimes to his loving wife when they were spending time at their cottage. He was always, and I mean, always such a very nice man to chat with and I will have great memories of him, eventhough we never got to meet in person. To his loving wife and to all of his family, I send all my sincere condolences.

Dear Connie, and family, please accept my deepest sympathy on Peter’s passing. Peter and I would have been colleagues and friends for almost 50 years. We certainly covered a lot of territory over that time. As faculty members we shared too many experiences to relate except to say that were very much of the same view on many subjects and topics of the time. Peter’s wisdom, humour and encouragement were always an inspiration to me especially during my years as associate dean. I particularly admired Peter’s concern and compassion for students both in and out of the classroom. He was a scholar with the common touch. His fairness was evident in many situations, but I would single out the years he chaired the Student Discipline Committee (as it was then known). He was most deserving as the first professor to receive the Rosemary Gill Award for his contribution to student life, and more recently was singled out as one of the School’s “beloved professors”. I was delighted to be present at the Law School a few months back when faculty and former students celebrated Peter’s enrollment in the Bertha Wilson Honour Society for his exceptional contributions to the legal profession. All of us who knew Peter have wonderful memories to comfort us, as we share the sorrow of his loss.

DEAR MRS DARBY and FAMILY ,
I had not seen Peter for many years and it was sad to read in the local paper that he had passed away.
We were classmates at Summerside High School, went on our separate ways and then caught up again at Dalhousie Law School where Peter was a year ahead of me. I am impressed by Peter’s wide legal experience, notably as a teacher and in related fields where he is remembered by associates and students.
Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss.

My family and I are saddened by this news. I haven’t seen the Darby’s much since the Ononette cottage burned. I recall several evening bridge games with he and Connie as hosts. And lots of beach afternoons over the years.
Big hugs to Darby’s from Stephensons

An inspiration to so many students.

The Darbys, woven into summer memories until the years meld together, insperable from hot lazy days, sandy beaches, fine dining, lobster around Mom and Dad’s table, bridge and laughter. Sending our deepest sympathy for your loss, Meg and Alan.

Dear Darby family.
I was sorry to read about your recent loss. Professor Darby was one of my professors in law school back in 1988-89 . He made learning dry subject matter interesting and fun , and he had a way of taking some of the anxiety out of daunting “first year”. I’m sure it was no coincidence that the administration created the opportunity for first year law students to experience Peter…a finer ambassador / introducer I can’t think of.
Ironically one of my colleagues and I were recently reminiscing about Peter and how fond of him we both were all these years later.
Please accept my sympathies.

Professor Darby somehow made law school (including even Property law!) interesting. He was an engaged, generous, and entertaining educator and I am very grateful for all the effort he gave to me and decades of other students at Dal Law School. Truly wonderful man.
