Just seeing this now, wish I had checked in more often. Colleen is someone I knew well while at the Mount, and I was really happy to hear that she was getting married. I know that being in the sort of relationship she was in with Mark was something she yearned for when I knew her best, and while I’m sad she has died, I’m glad she got one of the things she wanted most in life. My sympathies to the many I know will miss her.

I was so very saddened to learn of Colleen’s passing! Also so sorry that I was unaware until yesterday! My heart aches for you all and tears have flowed! My deepest sympathy to her family and my thoughts and prayers are with you! She will be missed by many! Colleen and I were grad students together at MSVU. She led such an inspiring life as she faced the many challenges she endured with such courage, determination and perseverance! I am no longer in Halifax and did not get to meet you Mark, but I remember being so happy to hear that she was getting married! How wonderful to see that come true! Such a beautiful example of unconditional love! May God give you all the strength you need at this difficult time an always!

Colleen was my go-to for bunny tips and tricks, not to mention a shared love of Ellen Page’s work. She always knew what kind of challenges CF was going to bring her but took them on each step at a time, determined to do what she needed to do. My heart breaks for her family and friends, I wish she’d had all the time in the world.

Mark. I am so saddened to learn of Colleen’s passing and am sending you and the other members of her family my deepest sympathy at this most difficult time. I served as Colleen’s thesis advisor as she completed her Master’s degree at MSVU and more recently my daughter and I have run into the two of you as you enjoyed a weekend brunch , often at Cora’s in Clayton Park. She always seemed so happy and I felt so glad for her. How I shall miss her smile and her welcoming hugs.
I was not able to attend yesterday’s celebration of her life as I have been in Montreal this past week attending my daughter’s graduation from Concordia . This morning I am sitting on my porch thinking about how I remember Colleen. I remember her seeetness. I remember her strength and bravery as she faced the difficulties life had given her. I remember her spirit of tenacity. Although Colleen looked to the future , she seized and lived fully in each moment. I can see a large white bird soaring in the deep blue sky over my home and know Colleen is also soaring free of pain.
We were all so fortunate to have known her even for such a short time. Mark, there are no words to ease your sense of loss . Hold Colleen close in memory, allow the love and support of your families and friends to provide you with healing and strength. I will never forget Colleen as a student and friend. I will continue to hold both of you in my thoughts and prayers, trusting that it helps you,Mark, to know that others care and are thinking of you.
With Sympathy,
L

I am saddened by the death of Colleen–a bright light snuffed out too soon. My sympathy to Mark and the rest of Colleen’s family. Colleen worked for me at Independent Living NS some years ago. Her strong commitment to the principles of Independent Living and the quality of her work earned her the Consumer of the Year Award from Independent Living Canada. She travelled with me to the IL Canada conference in Vancouver to receive her award, taking time out of the workshops to to zip line in the Rockies.
I will not be able to attend the celebration of life tomorrow because of prior commitments, but here’s my favourite Colleen story to share. One of her jobs at ILNS was editing our quarterly newsletter. One week in winter we were getting close to deadline. The weather was exceptionally cold, and Colleen asked if she could work on the newsletter at home, as the frigid air was causing her breathing problems as she waited for the bus. I agreed. “I have my laptop, and you’ll get the final draft for the printers on Friday,” she assured me. On Thursday, she emailed me to say she was being admitted to hospital. “But don’t worry,” she said. “I will finish off the newsletter and get it to you tomorrow afternoon to meet deadline.” On Friday afternoon, I received an email from her that went something like this: “You will find the newsletter attached print-ready. I am just doing the final edits. I am on the gurney being wheeled into the operating room. They are going to remove one lung.”
Colleen met her deadlines.

I know this comment was left a long time ago now, but I have to say this: Colleen and I are have been friends since kindergarten and were college room mates. I recall so many times of her in hospital completing her school work. To even say she as a hard worker doesn't even begin to explain it. Thanks for sharing this. I put my hands on my face and sighed and squeed to know that someone else saw this side of her.

Colleen was incredibly smart and compassionate. She always had great insight to contribute in class, and brightened my day with rabbit pictures and videos! Fortunate to have know her. I’ve made a donation in her memory to both CF Canada as well as 10,000 Carrots Rabbits Rescue.

Colleen was a wonderful person to work with. She was helpful at all times, with a quick wit and a wonderful skills set that she was always ready to share. Her love of bunnies led to many interesting conversations! She will be deeply missed. My deepest sympathies to those who are mourning a life cut off way too soon.
