Joseph Aloysius “Wishie” Campbell, 90
Glace Bay
We are deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of our dear father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend on December 23, 2021, at Victoria Haven, where he had been a resident for the past three months. He was 90 years old.
Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Donald John and Annie (McIntyre) Campbell. Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Wishie was survived by his daughter, Paula, and son-in-law Sean (who was like a son to him) with whom he resided with for the past two years; son Alex of Glace Bay; his pride and joy were his grandsons, Ryan (Angela) and Adam (Megan); great-grandchildren, William, Daniel, and Rebecca Anne (Becky), whom he adored. He will be missed by his fur baby “Gracie” who brought him so much happiness. Survived also by many nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law, Carole Ann Campbell, Dominion.
Wishie was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Mildred “Minnie” MacDonald on February 11, 2016. He missed her dearly and credited her for his long life.
Wishie is predeceased by his sisters, Veronica (Reginald Gouthro), Carmella (Aloysius Smith), Thecla (Murdoch Morrison), Dorothy (James O’Regan), Theresa (David Pinkerton), and Susan (Andrew MacNeil), and brothers, Donald, Malcolm, and William, as well as two stepsons, Jimmy and Bernie Young.
Wishie was a Veteran of the Korean War, serving overseas with the Queens Own Rifles.
He was a hardworking man, working in 1B, 20, 26, and Lingan Collieries.
Wishie lived a simple life, he loved his routine. He was an avid CBC radio listener and loved watching many news programs such as 60 Minutes, Land and Sea, and Mass for Shut ins. He enjoyed reading the Cape Breton Post with a coffee and his dog Gracie in his chair. Wishie also loved listening to country music, Jim Reeves being his favorite.
Wishie was a longtime resident of McIntyre Lane who appreciated his good neighbors who were always there for him and Mom over the years. Wishie enjoyed walking in Bridgeport and on the Boardwalk of Dominion, as well as chatting with friends on the bench at the mall.
Wishie was also a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Bridgeport.
These last few months were difficult, but he never complained, always a “Thank you”, he will be sorely missed. We now have two Guardian Angels looking over us.
Regretfully at this time there will be no Service. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, 902-849-4199. A mass of Christian Burial will take place at a later date, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau presiding.
Donations in Wishies memory may be made to the Immaculate Conception Cemetery Fund.
We would like to Thank the Staff at Victoria Haven Nursing Home for all the care and compassion, you all treated dad and I so well, your kindness will never be forgotten. You all are truly very special people. Thank you.
