Mary Gracie, 81
Glace Bay
We are saddened and heartbroken to announce the passing of our wife, and mother Mary Gracie, 81 of Glace Bay, after a sudden illness, on Thursday, September 30, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Mom passed the way she lived, quietly and with dignity. Her passing will leave broken hearts behind but knowing she is with her lord to whom she prayed to daily, offers us some consolation.
Mary was born and raised in Glace Bay to the late Anthony and Rose McCormick. She attended school in the town and soon after her schooling, Mary made her way to Ontario where so many Capers did in those days. This is where she met the love of her life Mabie and began their life together and had two children. After 14 years in Ontario, they made their way home to Glace Bay due to medical reasons and took up residence on Morrison Street with her mother Rose, whom she cared for until her death in 1983.
Mom worked at Chappel’s Building Supplies in Sydney and later at Glace Bay Building Supplies. Later when both stores closed, mom and dad once again made their way back to Toronto where mom worked for Home Depot until her retirement at age 72. They lived in the same building for 33 years and were known and loved by all. Several of the people who held a special place in mom’s heart; Kyle, Margaret,Matt, June, Carol,Katina, Bonnie; Ken and Kim, and their two girls.
Mom’s days were filled with reading, cooking, baking, and talking to friends (which she could do for hours on end) and going for countless walks with my brother's dog “Wolfie.” In 2020, they made their way home and took up residence in a beautiful duplex for which she loved. Due to COVID, it was somewhat difficult at that time to make friends, but Mom became friends with several of her neighbours and would sometimes bring them baked goods. She always filled her days and began an interest in gardening, with large displays of flowers that she tended to lovingly.
The highlight of every week were her telephone conversations with her sister Rose; and one day a week she made her way to the hairdresser to have her hair done by the Facchin sisters (thank you). One family member whom mom would talk about often and who held a special place in her heart was her nephew, Ron Pearson.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, Fabian (Mabbie) Gracie of 61 years; her two sons: Joe (Karen) and Kevin (Geraldine); brother, Joseph McCormick, Dallas, GA, USA; two sisters, Rose Marie McCormick, St. Catherine, ON. And Florence (Harry) Steele, Delaware, ON. Mary is also survived by her five grandchildren: Ashley (Kyle), Courtney (Chris), Kaley (Jason), Brittany and Danielle; two great-grandchildren, Jackson, and Aurora.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by five brothers: Tony, Bob, Patrick,John and Charles, as well as one sister, Colleen.
Donations may be made to the SPCA or a charity of one’s choice.
Special thank you to the Attending Paramedics and other First Responders who attended to mom at her home. Thank you to the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Emergency Dept., as well as ICU, your compassion and care shown to mom and our family will never be forgotten.
As per Mary’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199. Services will not be held at this time.
