Obituary of Gerry Derbyshire

George Gerald ‘Gerry’ Derbyshire Glace Bay Age 85 It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our loving dad, brother, grandfather, great grandfather. On Sunday August 1, 2021 at the Glace Bay Hospital, Dad passed away surrounded by his loving family. Born in Port Morien, Gerry was the son of George and Lillian (Melvin) Derbyshire. Shortly after the death of his mom, Gerry joined the Armed Forces and worked his way up to Sergeant in ‘Black Watch’ in Nova Scotia. In 1955 he met the love of his life Katherine ‘Kitty’ Snow, whom he married in 1957. After the birth of their first child, Margaret, dad did not re-enlist but came to Cape Breton and became a coal miner until his retirement. My parents loved to shoot darts and go dancing. They belonged to both mixed and single dart leagues. Upon dad’s retirement and his love of music he tried his hand at being a D.J. He could be found playing music at family and friends special occasions or just playing for fun in the basement. Gerry is survived by his daughters: Margaret ‘Margie’ MacDougall, Darlene (Jack) Gibson, Geraldine (Dea) Derbyshire, all of Glace Bay; sons, Tim (Sandra) Derbyshire, Glace Bay, Orillia, Ontario and Dennis Derbyshire, Sydney; one brother, Wayne (Lucella) Derbyshire , Mexico; sister, Frances Ferguson, Halifax, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, and nieces, whom he loved dearly; especially ‘My Girl” his fur baby. Gerry was predeceased by his loving wife of years, Katherine ‘Kit’; parents, George and Lillian ; one brother, Richard ‘Dick’ Derbyshire. Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J.Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS (902-849-4199). Interment to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in dad’s memory may be made to an organization or charity of your choice. On behalf of the Derbyshire family a heartfelt thank you.
