Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
CHISHOLM, George William “Bill”- Age 81, of Bedford, passed away on May 8 at the QEII Emergency. Son of the late James and Jessie (MacLaren) Chishom. Bill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edith (Johnson), sons Darrell (Lynda) of Ontario and James of Manitoba, daughter Krista Parnell (David) of Timberlea. Grandchildren Thrya, Sean, Noah Chisholm (Ontario), Jessie Parnell (Edmonton), Kirsten Parnell (Weymouth) and great grandson, Finnley (Edmonton). Bill is also survived by his sister, Joan MacKay (George), New Glasgow and brothers Jack Chisholm (Marg) of Abercrombie and Garth Chisholm (Lynda) of Eureka. Bill was predeceased by his brother, Harold and grandson, Brennan.
Bill was a past member of the Elks Lodge and a longtime member of River Oaks Golf Club. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion # 129.
After graduating from East Pictou Rural High, Bill moved to Halifax to join an auditing firm. He then moved on to Moirs Bakery and from there, to Bens Bakery where he retired in 1999 after serving as Comptroller for 37 years.
Bill loved all sports; even playing goalie on his high school hockey team which won the Provincial Championships in 1959. He passed on his love of sports to his children who played various sports as they grew. When Bill's granchildren came along, he enjoyed nothing more than watching them play and compete. From Thyra and Noah's soccer games to Jessie and Kirsten's baton twirling competitions and parades, to Sean's hockey games. Until he passed, he never missed watching Sean play for the Brooks Bandits (AJHL) on his computer link. He also passed on his love of golf and created lifelong fans of the game by teaching Jessie and Kirsten to play. He was his granchildren's biggest fan.
Bill also loved dancing, music and playing cards. There was always one of these things happening in the house. There was never a car ride without old country music and he never missed a chance to play cards with his buddies at "The Club".
By far, Bill's favorite thing to do was travel. Whether it was just a Sunday morning drive along a secondary road he'd never been on, or one of the many family vacations that saw roads from Newfoundland to Ontario to New England.
When Bill retired, he fullfilled a long-time dream of travelling the Alaska highway from start to finish. He purchased a travel van and he and Edie were off on a five-month journey, stopping at various spots along the way to visit with family and friends across the country. For several years, Bill and Edie travelled the continent from coast to coast. Bill loved every minute. His last words, spoken to Edie, were "It's been a long journey". Now that Bill is on his final journey, his family wishes him safe travels.
Special thanks to Dr. MacLean and to Dr. Shuiakamar and staff of the Hematology Department for their care over the last two years. At Bill's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the IWK Children’s Hospital.
