John ‘Bear’ Matheson Glace Bay It is with heavy hearts that we the family announce the passing of John 'Bear' Matheson on April 25, 2021. John passed peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was the son of the late Lillian (Howie) and Melvin Matheson. A loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother, he will be missed terribly by his loving wife of 64 years Betty; daughter Glenda (Neil) McNalley; son John (Darlene) and daughter Shauna (Terry) as well as daughters-in-law Mary and Donna. John is also survived by grandchildren Shauna (Jay), Amanda (Ben), Shawn, Dave (Val), Keith (Jill), Danielle (Dano), Brett, Samantha (Jeremy), Nicole, Jamie (Candace), Joey (Desiree), Jennifer (Devin), Adam (Crystal) and Jessica (Carl). John also leaves behind 26 great-grandchildren whom he adored along with siblings Beverly Lockman, Wes, Busher and sister-in-law Patsy. John was predeceased by his two loving sons Kevin and Rod; brothers Frank and Jimmy; brother-in-law Dave and sisters-in-law Helen and Carol. Bear was a coal miner and finished his career at the Machine Shop. Bear could often be found sitting on his front step waving to all who passed by with an infectious smile on his face. He also enjoyed his trips down to the harbor to catch up with his fisherman friends. He will be missed out on the Mira where he spent every summer with his family and friends making memories that will always be in our hearts. One of his favorite things to do on the Mira was boating up the river to show off the Eagles nest to his family and friends. Bear enjoyed sitting in his garage with the door open playing his music for all the neighbors to hear. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of TJ Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS (902-849-4199) In Lieu of flowers a donation can be made to a charity of your choice. Due to Covid-19, visitation and service will be held at a later date. Gone is the face we loved so dear, Silent is the voice we loved to hear; Too far away for sight or speech, But not too far for thought to reach, Sweet to remember him who once was here, And who, though absent, is just as dear.
