Marie Frances Currie Reserve May 30, 1932 - March 26, 2021 It is with great sorrow that, we, the family, announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt and friend, Marie Currie, at Seaview Manor on Friday, March 26, 2021. Marie was predeceased by her parents Daniel and Mary Ellen (Deveaux) Morrison; her loving husband of 60 years, Gerald; and her sister Mary Ellen Polegato. Mom was orphaned at a very young age and was raised by her maternal grandparents, Nicholas and Felicities Deveaux. Although raised separately, the sisters remained very close and Mary Ellen’s children always held a special place in her heart. Marie is survived by her children Amelia (Kevin) Simmons, Jerry (Stephanie), Adrian (Norma), Dannie (Lois) Dartmouth, Lana (Paul) Hebert, Moncton. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren Stephen Simmons (Stacey), (Ayden); Shaun (Crystal) Simmons (Cole, Greyson); Amanda (Dave) Smith (Maxley, Finley); Sarah (Jordan) Campbell (MacKenzie); Christopher (Melissa) Currie (Darci, Kevin); Maria (Bryceson) McNeil (Daniel); Denis, Jeremy, Andre and Celina Hebert (Holly); sisters-in-law, Margaret Treige, Donna Currie, Betty Currie and Peggy Currie; also many nieces, nephews and friends. Mom was a force to be reckoned with; she was strong, lively, intelligent, determined, and generous with a great sense of humor. Mom was a care provider for many of her family members, friends and neighbors. She started her health care career as a Nurse’s Aide at Glace Bay Community Hospital, and PCW at Seaview Manor. At age 55, she fulfilled one of her dreams, went to Vocational School, became an LPN and worked at Seaview Manor until her retirement at 65. Mom loved professional nursing and missed it for many years after retiring. Mom loved playing bingo, making crafts, and her shopping trips with family and friends. She always enjoyed her Saturday night dance, Dad referring to Mom as “crazy legs”! They also enjoyed travelling, cruising and the hot Caribbean sun. Mom returned to Seaview Manor, making it her home since December, 2019. She developed a special bond with the staff and embraced them as her extended family. We are very thankful for all those working at the Manor who loved her and created a home for her. We want to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. David Ley for the loving care provided to our mother. Being best friends with his mother, Marion, she was quick to remind him she knew him since he was a baby. Our family is extremely grateful for the care she received from home care providers, family and friends while at home. We want to express our deepest gratitude to the nurses, doctors, paramedics and other health care professionals who cared for our mother during her last years. Special thanks to Crystal Simmons RN and Val Turnbull RN for everything you’ve done for her over the years, we are eternally thankful... in mom’s vocabulary, you are a true meaning of the word “nurse”. In keeping with Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be announced at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. (902)849-4199. Donations in Mom's memory can be made to St. Joseph’s and Holy Family Cemetery Fund, Seaview Manor Bus Fund or a charity of your choice. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at www.tjtracey.com.
