Obituary of Mildred Evelyn Kemp
Please share a memory of Mildred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mildred Evelyn Kemp (Millie), 98, passed away peacefully while her daughter Mary held her hand on February 16, 2021 at Hants Community Hospital.
Born Nov. 8, 1922 Millie was the daughter of the late Douglas James Spence and Winnifred Ann (Brown) Spence of Halifax. Mom/Millie married her childhood sweetheart on May 24, 1947. Together they raised nine children. Sadly, Dad died unexpectedly in 1972 leaving Mom with six children still at home. She faced this challenge independently with strong resolve and faith.
Millie’s life was rich with family, friends, and faith. She was very active at St. John the Baptist Church, Purcells Cove Rd. as a Server, Reader, Choir member and CWL life member. She was generous with her time from teaching Catechism to elementary children to volunteering at Hope Cottage. She bowled until she was 93, she drove herself to the Wave Pool for Aqua Aerobics classes three times a week until she was 95. At 90, one of her regular passengers claimed Millie was attentive and fearless driving around the Armdale Rotary. Millie always claimed she had a long, healthy life because she stayed active and ate a ½ cup of blueberries with her breakfast.
We would like to thank all her friends and neighbours who shovelled her walkway, picked up groceries, drove her to Bingo and Church and who visited her when she couldn’t get out. We also thank the dedicated caregivers who assisted Mom over the past 5 years allowing her to maintain her dignity and much of her independence. To name a few: NSHA Staff, VON, Para Med, Melville Heights’ staff, Red Cross, Windsor Elms’ Staff, as well as the Staff at Hants Community Hospital. Thank you Catholic Priest, Father John who led bedside prayers with the family and provided Sacrament before her passing.
Millie is survived by her loving children, Douglas (Pat), Burlington; Paul (Monica), Scotsburn; Stephen (Joan), West Lawrencetown; Norman (Nancy), Beaver Bank; Danny’s wife Christine, Halifax; Mary Watters (Dan), Halifax; Peter, Halifax; Marilyn Adams (Steve), Calgary; Terry (Nancy), Halifax. Mom’s presence in our lives will be greatly missed; however, she left us with a legacy of cherished memories. She always made time for and had a special relationship with her many grandchildren and great grandchildren who always lit up her world and that relationship was reciprocated. Her loving, giving, and supportive nature was how she mentored those around her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bertram (Bert) John Kemp; son, Daniel (Danny) Edward Kemp; brothers Vernon and Gerald; sisters Jean Mayfield and Geraldine Arthur.
Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 71 McQuade Lake Crescent. To place online condolences please visit www.tjtracey.com.
