Our whole family knew that Uncle Herb had been battling illness for the many years now, yet it still shocked and saddened us to hear of his passing. This year has been really unfair.
Whenever we visited Newfoundland, Herb was always at or hosting events and gatherings, at Christmas, New Year's, birthdays, and whenever. He was (when dealing with our family) often quiet, reserved, and unassuming, but you could always rely on him for a sly comment, or kind gesture to make sure none of us were left out. A cherished memory for Lesli is visiting Mt Pearl in the summers as a child to spend a few days with Uncle Herb, Aunt Carol and Hilary. He was always generous and giving with his time, either spending time with our kids, or sitting discussing what was happening in our lives. He was always like that.
Part of our family (not Stephen, sadly) has great memories of visiting Herb and Carol in Terra Nova, (Ethan especially when he was younger) and remembering indeed how great and special a place it is. Part of that, a big part, was the people involved, and the memories that they helped create.
Herb will be greatly missed.
