So very sorry to hear about Shaun’s passing. When I was new to the field of addiction, I learned a great deal from Shaun. I continue to mention him when I share his knowledge in my work and life. He was a kind and thoughtful colleague. He will be greatly missed.

I grew up with Shaun and I have great memories playing road /ice hockey, biking around our neighborhood, playing tennis, snooker and baseball at the field across from his home, just being carefree kids. Magically showing up at noon on weekends for Shirley to make us lunch. I remember John / Shirley / Shaun picking me up in the cold winters morning for early morning hockey practices in their Toyota Cressida. Shaun was a great combination of smart / funny and athletic. Greg too. To this day I still can’t figure out some of the card tricks Shaun played on me. I also remember Shaun scoring 6 goals / 2 assists in an 8-0 ice hockey game. Although we didn’t stay in touch as we grew older I often thought of Shaun and the Black Family. Hands down..solid people..... I count myself lucky to have spent time with Shaun and his family.
My heart goes out to you.

Shaun was a friend, teacher, mentor, and valued colleague...I was one of the many “student” Addiction Service nurses that he tried so diligently to educate over the years...I think we gave him some occasional cause for concern over the many years that I knew him. Always kind, super intelligent, thoughtful and full of laughter...he will be sorely missed. I am thankful to have known him.

Shirley, Kelly and Greg.
Denis Barry notified me of the terrible news of Shaun’s passing.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
As I thought about Shaun, my initial deep sadness kept getting pushed aside by all the great memories of him and the laughs we had together. I was taken back to the day of my wedding when his words of support as my best man were, “Art are you sure you know what you are doing? I’m visualizing you driving around in a panel station wagon with a couple of kids.” He then laughed uncontrollably.
A lot of time has passed since then, and luckily we did get together several times over the years when Karen and I would visit our daughter Kendra in Halifax. Shaun was always the same, full of laughter, brilliant and attentive in conversation, and he would always sneak away and pay the dinner bill before I had a chance. We would then part ways with the “Uncomfortable man hug” as he would always describe it with a chuckle.
I will always look back on our times together with a smile. The world was a better place with him in it. I was honored to be included as one of his many friends. I will miss him, and our visits to Halifax will never be the same.
A big virtual hug to you all.

I was saddened to hear of Shaun's passing. I had not seen Shaun in a few years but got to know him at SMU. Shaun always lived his life at a standard I always aspired to but was never able to attain. He never complained, always positive. Shaun was a huge Habs fan and his prediction of their Cup win in '93 despite me laughing at him thinking it was preposterous at the time was always a thorn in my side. Over the years we exchanged prank phone calls and prank voice messages although I could never outdo the prank call he made to the Pharmacare program in my presence. Shaun will be missed.

I was saddened to hear this news. Shawn was in my MBA class 30 years ago. He was one of those guys that was inherently decent to the core. I ran into him a couple times since then. Successful but still the same guy.
My thoughts are with the family at this time.

I met Shaun through a course he taught at what was formerly known as Affected Others at Addiction Services. I, and many others, were in that course because we had a loved one harmfully involved with drugs or alcohol and sometimes both. We were mostly desperately seeking a solution and all had specific issues we were dealing with. Shaun patiently took the time to compassionately address each and every one of our questions. For many of us, this information made all the difference in the world in understanding what we were dealing with. The chemical impact on the brain was greater than us. I was sorry to see that such a compassionate and bright light has left us all far too soon. My sincere condolences.

I have just read the paper and came across Shaun's obituary. I was one of his nurses many years ago on the Kidney Transplant Unit and recognized him immediately. I remember him very well, with fondness, and was unaware of the great things he went on to achieve in life and career. My deep condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

I worked with Shaun briefly in addictions, but he left a great impression. He was among the smartest people I've ever met and spoke so passionately and effortlessly about his work. I especially enjoyed watching him challenge those around him in intellectual conversation and mischief. He will be missed.

Shaun was a shining light and totally respected colleague in the addictions field. I consulted him so many times over the years, and marvelled at his ability to captivate audiences on the “dry” subject of pharmacology. His distinction between dependency and addiction, illustrated poignantly through his lived experience with diabetes, was memorable. Shaun’s sense of humour was amazing, as was his congeniality. Rest in eternal peace, Shaun; you most certainly left this world enriched, and will be sorely missed ❤️

Shaun started with the Commission on Drug Dependency in the same year I did. I remember when he started and came to do an education session with us in South West Nova on the pharmacological impacts of drug use. It was the first time I had ever seen a power point presentation with all the fancy bells and whistles and the energy of a great presenter. I had huge respect and fondness for Shaun's intellect, knowledge and sense of dry humour. My deep condolences to his family and friends.
