Having known Winnie most of her lifetime, before she became Mrs. Mike Chafe, we are happy to attest to the sterling character and beauty of this lady. Winnie's standards were very high and were exemplified here in Cape Breton and on the world stage with her love and interpretation of violin music. Her treasured violin took her far and wide and served Cape Breton well with her masterful interpretation of Celtic and classical music. To Winnie's treasured family and lifelong friends and to her admiring public, we would like to offer heartfelt condolences along with our assurances and prayers that Winnie rest in peace.

I was saddened to hear the news of Mrs Chafe's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with her family in this difficult time.
Many years ago, while I was in Junior and Senior High School, I used to take care of her lawn; mowing, trimming, watering, etc. I very much looked forward to my bi-weekly visits as she was so kind and generous. It almost didn't feel like work. She was an absolute gem of a person who was great to work for.
On many Saturday afternoons, she could be heard inside making music. Even then I felt so fortunate to be able to hear a master of her art form.
Rest in peace.
Joe

Sending deepest condolences to the family & friends of Winnie Chafe. I was introduced to her music via my father who was a huge fan of her playing. What my dad admired so much about Winnie, was that she could play ALL styles of violin music: Classical, old tyme, & traditional Scottish tunes. I met her a few times & had lovely conversations with her about her music & her family. She was always very gracious & inspired me to take up the violin after I moved to Ontario. Her music will live on in the hearts of many. She will be remembered as one of Cape Breton's finest!

Dear Pat. We were so very saddened to learn of your moms passing. Although we only knew her for a short time, we feel fortunate to have met her. We so enjoyed chatting with her when we visited with Jessie. She was always so happy and smiling and always mentioned her daughter, Pat. She talked about her music career with us and told us one day she would show us her fiddle. She was just so sweet. We send our sincere condolences to you and the family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Take care.

Dear Pat I just wanted to send both you and your family my prayers, on the passing of your mother. She was a very talented woman, who clearly used her musical gifts to share and inspire others. That, of course, is the purpose of the gifts God gives us. Clearly, you were also blessed with the same gift and have continued on in her footsteps. While I didn't get the opportunity to meet your mother, I feel that I actually got to know her, through your talents and stories.
May God Bless You and Your Family

It is with mixed emotions that we have learned of the passing of the Matriarch of the MacMullin Clan, dad's older sister Winnie, sad that we have lost another wonderful person; but joy knowing her welcoming committee at the Pearly Gates will include her beloved husband Mike, Mother, Father, brothers, Sonny and Joey ,and brother-in-law Billy and nephew, Jamie. At the moment St Peter is being entertained to a great Ceilidh hosted by the Queen of Scottish Airs and seconded by her father, Rod. My brothers and I have wonderful memories of our time spent on Chappel Drive with Winnie, Mike and our Cousins Pat, Chrisy and Dianna you are all in our prayers. Love from the Winnipeg portion of the Clan, Jim, Sharon, Danny, Rob and Jamie.

So sorry for Cape Breton’s loss. We all feel the loss. We have so many fond memories of Winnie.
When the Grand Masters honored Winnie in Moncton she attended the event. One of the after parties was at our home and Winnie came to our place!! We were so excited and really pleased. We did not have to ask twice for her to come to the front and lead the fiddle jam. Needless to say the local fiddlers could hardly believe they were being led by THE Winnie Chafe. It was a wonderful experience for us all. Our sincere condolences to Winnie's family.
We are sad

Being a DJ I was kind of familiar (but not a fan) with her music but my mother (who passed a few years back) was a huge fan. One night at a wedding at the Inverary Inn I set up and sat in the corner while Winnie and her daughter played for the supper crowd. When she finished her first song I sat there amazed and began to applaud and continued after each song she performed. When they were done they packed up their instruments and Winnie walked over to me and Thanked ME and noted that it was the first time in all her years that a DJ clapped for her at an event. She changed my way of thinking that night (in regards to Celtic music and especially the fiddle) and just by that brief conversation I could tell she was a very sweet and lovely lady. (OLD SOUL) My condolences to the family, she will be thoroughly missed by all. --- Francis, Sydney Nova Scotia

On the passing of Winnie Chafe, HMCS GLACE BAY wishes to pass condolences to the loved ones she has left behind. Mrs. Chafe was the ship’s sponsor and will be remembered by GLA for the warmth she shared with the crews throughout the years. During her visits to GLA, even though her impressive resume included playing for royalty and breaking barriers as the first woman to become International Fiddling Champion, she still fostered a comforting atmosphere where the crew felt at ease referring to her as “Mom”. From all of us onboard, thank you for your service Mom.
