Frances Thompson
Glace Bay
The family of Frances Thompson 95, wish to announce her peaceful passing on Tuesday November 24th, 2020 in Glace Bay. Frances was a long time resident of Norwood St. in Glace Bay and was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Julia (MacKinnon) O’Handley.
Frances spent many summers camping in Lake Ainslie with her late husband Stewart and formed many life long friendships, including that of her very close friend Sylvia Tower. Frances enjoyed the sunshine and could always be found outside soaking up the rays. She loved to reminisce with her sisters around the table of the old homestead in Passchendaele and regardless of the company she was in, had no problem offering you her opinion. Grandmother, as she was affectionately referred to by her grandchildren and great grandchildren was often the life of the party and thoroughly enjoyed good music, conversation and if need be, a rum and coke. Frances was an avid reader and loved to watch the news. For a number of years she operated Frances’s dairy on Mansfield St. in Passchendaele and also worked in the kitchen of Jay’s restaurant in Glace Bay, the old A&W on Welton street in Sydney and the cafeteria of the former AVTC , now Marconi Campus. Frances was a kind and generous woman who will be missed by all.
Frances was predeceased by her husband Stewart Thompson in 2002 and her grandson Kenneth who was very dear to her heart. Frances was also predeceased by siblings Christie, Ella, Margaret, Mary, Goldie, Lily, Sandy, John and Angus.
She is survived by daughters, Ruth(Ross), Heather(late Tom); sons, Stewart Jr.(Debbie), Lowell (Deanna) and a granddaughter, Heather Lynn(Danny) who was raised as one of her own. She is also survived by a special great grandchild Matthew who was her pride and joy.
Left to mourn are grandchildren Craig O, Bradley, Kelly Jo , John Stewart, Erica, Craig M, Amanda and Jami Leigh. There are 13 great grandchildren along with three great great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
