Dear Family, I opened the Chronicle Herald to the obituaries and looked down to a face that I knew in a second was Margie, I was shocked. Despite not having seen her for years, she looked just like she did at 16, when she used to visit our home with my sister Elizabeth. She will be remembered always for her intelligence, her warmth, her gentle ways, and of course her giggle. Our most sincere and heartfelt sympathy to each of you at this sad and tragic time. I worked with Margaret for a few years at the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women and we kept in touch including after she started her Ph.D. at Dalhousie University and later started work at CBU. She was a great colleague, always supportive and willing to share information about her research and she was never in a bad mood...always smiling and happy. May you rest in peace Margaret...you will be sorely missed by you family and your numerous friends.

Marg was a tremendous friend. Since our first meeting - roommates at the University of King's College - we shared many life events - happy and sad - over the last 45 years but I was not prepared for this news.
Jessica and Leah you know that you were the world to your Mom. My heart is broken for you. May you take all of your Mom's guidance and wisdom and live your lives to achieve your full potential. Most of all, your Mom would want you to be happy. This may seem impossible in these dark days but may you find your way in time, just as your Mom did when she suddenly lost her mother.
I'm so fortunate that Marg was part of my life, so many stories and experiences interwoven over the years.
To Marg's siblings and extended family, please accept my deepest sympathy.
With love and caring on this sudden loss in our lives,
Anne

I'm sorry to hear of Margaret's passing, I was simply devastated to hear the news.
I had Margaret in my third year of university for a statistics class - which she made extremely enjoyable given the normally challenging subject! The following year, she asked me to be her Teaching Assistant for that same statistics class and also her Research Assistant. I was thrilled with the opportunity. During this time, we worked closely and made a connection that was more like that a friend, not a boss.
She was a appitimy of caring and understanding. She always gave you a chance and never gave up on anyone. She was an inspiration and inspired me to be a better person each and everyday. The research she dedicated her career to was a reflection of this. She was widely loved by the community as a whole.
After receiving the news, I felt devastated. I was mourning her loss and wishing I was better at keeping in touch. The more I mourned, the more I realized that the reason I felt so sad was because the relationship held such value to me. She taught me so much while bringing so much joy to my life with her infectious laugh. For that, I'll be forever thankful. Although I will continue to mourn her loss, I am now doing it with the understanding and appreciation of all she brought to not only my life, but the lives of everyone she knew.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful mom with all of us - she spoke so highly of her girls!
Keeping you in my thoughts,
Claire Chabassol

Margaret was a professor of mine in my second year of CBU. She helped me immensely in the course, always ensuring that I understood the work and that I did well. She did this for each of her students. She was kind and caring and compassionate. I used to run into her in the summer when I worked at CBU and she always asked how I was doing. She will be greatly missed. Hold your wonderful memories of her dear and I hope they bring you comfort.

Margaret and I were colleagues at the Nova Scotia Women’s Directorate in the early 1990s. I remember her as down to earth , practical, the default computer techie of the office – and so ready to help the rest of us with our technical problems! And funny ! – we had at least a couple of laughs almost every day.
We stayed in touch over the years, though I didn’t see much of her in person, especially after her move to Cape Breton. The last time I visited with Margaret was in 2018, at her home in Howie Centre, where my husband and I had dinner with her en route to the ferry in North Sydney. We had a tour of her garden, which, it being early June, was just getting started for the summer. We then spent the evening laughing our heads off! Happy memories.
Margaret was truly a shining light. The world is a poorer, darker place without her glow.
My deepest condolences to her entire family, and her colleagues.

Margie was such a bright light with generosity, kindness, empathy and intellectually dynamic. Her laughter, smiles and the ability to light up a room with positive energy will be what I remember most about her-a rare and precious quality. I am so sorry that she was taken away too soon but I greatly cherish to have known her and to have been impacted forever by her gentle, giving spirit. Rest in Peace Margie. Robin Oakley

I knew Margie as an exceptional student at King;s and Dalhousie and had the privilege of being her supervisor for her honours B.A. thesis. That was a memorable experience as she scaled the heights (successfully) of launching a methodological critique of a renowned sociological classic ! From then on we were friends and colleagues. What a terrible loss, but what a life well lived. Deepest sympathies to Geoff and all members of Margie.s family.

Oh, Margaret. What am I to do without my favourite research collaborator? I remember when you first hired me to consult on the Family Mosaic project. You thought I was working too hard and long for the contracted sum and so you went back to your boss in the provincial government and freed up another payment to double my compensation. I hadn't said a word and knew nothing about your actions until they were complete. How I marveled at your prowess with SPSS syntax. No drop down menus for you: you wanted more specific answers!
Of course, you spoke Sociologese and I spoke Psychologese but we were usually saying the same thing. And, even when we weren't we both respected the views of the other and were able to work it out. You see, Margaret, although you were passionate about your commitment to make the world a better place, you never claimed to own the truth. Today's university and those true scholars who are left are sure going to miss you collegiality and true tolerance.
Your work focused on those shoved to society's margins and went beyond simply placing words in esoteric and little read journals. You were determined to see your work translate into action in your own community. Your work might have brought lesser humans down into pools of frustration and cynicism, but that wasn't you. Your unique laugh, smiling countenance, and obvious love of people spread sunshine to wherever you are.
Well, Margaret, on the cusp of retirement it turns out that I'm not going to miss my favourite collaborate all that much. I will, however, miss terribly my kind, and thoroughly decent in every way, friend.

Thank you Steve, well said. Your collaboration with Margaret was a good example of her holistic approach to research and her dedication to seeking knowledge and understanding outside the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines. I know she valued your friendship as well as your insights.

Margie was a ray of sunshine during our shared time in the SOSA department at Dalhousie--always quick with a smile, an encouraging word, a good gardening tip, and that delightful laugh! She was a genuinely lovely person and she will be remembered and missed.

We at the Sociology and Social Anthropology Department at Dal are so sorry to hear of the passing of Margie. She was such a positive force in her time in the Department. Its kind of amazing that she was able to combine her serious commitment to exploring and addressing social inequality with a positive outlook on life. But that's what she seemed to do. Our profound sympathies to her family, but also to her students and colleagues.

To Margarets family - For me she will always be Margie. My friend through adolescence and young adulthood, we stood for one another through our marriages, we entered motherhood with trepidation. She was brilliant, driven, compassionate, and a wonderful friend. We spoke quietly throughout the years, most recently in June of this year when we shared memories and wished each other best wishes through the pandemic, making plans to "get together soon". While that is not to be, I hold a heart full of memories that I will cherish forever, as will you, her family. Warmest condolences, from her friend Lauraine (Prest) Smith

My wife Willa and I were saddened to learn of Margaret's passing. Margaret was one of very best students I encountered during my
nearly 40 years of teaching at Dalhousie. She possessed a keen intellect, a searching mind, and a passion to create and apply knowledge that benefits the socially disadvantaged. Margaret's positivity and zest for life were a gift to all who knew her. Our condolences to Geoff, her family, and her students.
