Bernard 'Bernie' A Somerton
Glace Bay
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather Bernard A. Somerton, 76 of Glace Bay on October 30th at Glace Bay General Hospital with his family by his side.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Harold J. and Olive C.(Gallant)Somerton.
Bernie was a private, humble man that would help anyone in need and could turn his hand to anything. He grew up in the Hub, loved his Montreal Canadiens and Atlanta Braves. Bernie was employed with Devco for many years as a coal miner until his retirement. Most days you could find him watching the Weather Network while listening to classic country music and spent his summers in Ben Eoin Beach sitting under the awning with his best pal Dougie.
Bernie was survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Brenda(Lloyd); two daughters Wendy of Sydney River, Kelly (Todd) of Halifax and his only son Bernie (Heather) of Glace Bay. Papa will also leave behind four grandchildren Collin, Laura, Kris and Faith and his great grandson to be Baby Noah. He also leaves behind his cherished brothers and sisters, Joey (Eleanor), Gerald (Bev), Wayne, Karen and Corrine (Myles). He also leaves behind his best pal Dougie Snow, whom all will miss him dearly.
Bernie was predeceased by his parents Harold J. and Olive C. Somerton.
Visitation will be held on Thursday November 5th between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at TJ Tracey Cremation Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Fr. Duaine Devereaux officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. A special thank you to the nurses and doctors of 3 West at the Glace Bay General for the compassion and support during his illness.
