Alice Joyce Payne
Glace Bay
It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Alice 'Joyce' Payne, announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother and wife on Sunday October 4, surrounded by her family.
Born in Neil's Harbour, Joyce excelled in school, being pushed through, graded and eventually becoming a CNA. Her working career was cut short because she found her true calling as a mother at the age of 18. She possessed every quality a mother, and grandmother should have. She was tender yet stern, loving and committed. No belly was empty leaving her house and you could often find her over a stove or somewhere in the kitchen. Her doors were never closed, as many of her children, grandchildren and family friends found their way back to her nest at some point. Joyce enjoyed having the love of her life close by her, whether it was out in the garage working or going for countless drives. She loved her family, which was her greatest accomplishment. In her later years you could find her around another table with her family and watching the news with her husband.
She was survived by her loving husband of 57 years, John 'Byshe' Toomey; her children, Brent (Sandy), Wendy (Billy), Arthur 'Ricky', John Bernard 'Buddy' and Allison 'Sue'; her grandchildren Chris (Ashley), Jeffery (Bonnie), Jennifer, Justin (Jih), Josh, Rebecca, Ryan and Riley. She is also survived by the light of her later years, her great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Elena, Emmett, Archer and Logan. Joyce is also survived by her brother Walter (Sheila), dedicated neighbors Sherry, Phillip and little Phil, long-time friend John Gordon and many other family and friends.
Joyce was predeceased by her son Thomas Michael 'Toddy'; brother Art and parents Helen and Abe Sweet.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of life for Joyce will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2020 with Lily MacDonald officiating at T.J Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS(902-849-4199)
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you take a day and have a hot meal with your loved ones in Joyce's memory.
