Obituary of Virginia Helen Doody

Age 91, of Halifax, born April 28, 1929, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, died on Monday, September 21st, on the Feast Day of St. Matthew, at the Shannex facility, on 156 Parkland Drive, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Toni was the daughter of Evans and Lexina Carroll, 113 Brookside Street, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, and worked for her father, at Carroll’s Drugstore soda fountain, while growing up. She also played the piano as a young girl, and had a dog named Mickey. Toni graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Glace Bay, on August 3, 1950, with a Nursing Diploma. She worked at Camp Hill Hospital, in Halifax, and shared her Quinpool / Robie Street apartment with sister Peggy. Mother enjoyed participating in bowling leagues as well as card games, such as bridge and cribbage, and enjoyed live theater (Neptune Theater). Toni never got her drivers license, and instead preferred to walk throughout the West End of Halifax. Mother was proud of her Cape Breton roots, especially her beautiful home town, of Glace Bay. Predeceased by son Gregory (1968), husband Myles (2015), sister Peggy Dubicki (Ontario), and parents Evans and Lexina Carroll. Toni is survived by 4 sons: Jim (Carol); granddaughter Charlotte, Calgary, John (Debbie), grandsons Patrick and Lucas, of Yellowknife, NT, David (Irene), Cottam, Ontario, Brian of Ottawa, Ontario, and two brothers John (Noreen) Carroll and Hugh (Carol) Carroll, both of Ontario. We would like to thank her caregivers; “The St. Philomena Wonder-Workers”, and all staff at Shannex, Drummond Hall & Mount Lane, which was her home since December 2016. Special thanks also to her friends and neighbors, at Mount Lane, including the Sisters of Charity, who organized many masses for the residents. A special thank you to The Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Medjugorje, St. Bridget, St. Padre Pio, and St. Philomena, for the many blessings. Visitation will be held between 9:00 am and 10:00 am, prior to the funeral mass, on Thursday, October 1st, at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax, B3L-2H4. The funeral mass will be held at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church at 10:00 am, on Thursday, October 1st. Registration is encouraged in advance at St. Agnes, 902-454-8200, and masks are required inside of the church. There will be no reception due to Government of Nova Scotia restrictions. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada, following the funeral mass.
