John Raymond Young, MWO (Ret’d) CD3 Glace Bay It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Raymond Young, age 74, on August 25, 2020, at home surrounded by his daughters. Born in Glace Bay, John was the son of the late John B. and Florence (Stevens) Young. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Aleta (MacDonald) in 2018. John enlisted in the RCAF in 1966 and following Basic Training and Trades Training was employed as a Radar Technician for over 42 years on what was known as the Pinetree Line, serving at: Sydney NS, Moisie QC, Moosonee ON, Lowther ON, Falconbridge ON and Gypsumville MB. He was also posted to the Eastern Air Defense Sector HQ (part of NORAD) in Rome NY, then an instructor at 1st Radar and Communications School in Kingston ON, followed by a position at National Defense Headquarters (NDHQ) in Ottawa, ON. After retiring at the rank of Master Warrant Officer from the Regular Forces, he transferred to the Air Reserves and was employed as the Site Supervisor at Canadian Coastal Radar Site Sydney. John was a dedicated military officer and well respected by his colleagues. Left to mourn his passing are his daughters, Rachelle (Aaron) MacIsaac, Glace Bay, and Deanna (Jason Daix), Porters Lake. His granddaughter, Alexa, brought so much joy to his life, especially with her daily after school visits and monthly trips to Home Depot to attend the kids workshops to build a project together. John is also survived by his sister, Jeanette Grant, Glace Bay, brother, Robert, Mississauga ON, as well as brothers-in-law, J. David (Eleanor) MacDonald, Halifax, and Clary (Ann) MacDonald. He thought of Clary more as a brother and looked forward to their golf outings and “always entertaining” get-togethers. John will be fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews. His quiet demeanor, kindness and courteous nature will be dearly missed. Besides his parents, and wife Aleta, John was also preceded by his father and mother-in-law, Jimmy R. and Frances (MacCormack) MacDonald; sister-in-law, Muriel and brother-in-law, Paul. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or charity of choice. The family wishes to thank the Palliative Care team, particularly Michelle Kelly, and VON staff for their kindness and compassion. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.tjtracey.com.
