Neil Francis “Frank” Currie
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Neil Francis “Frank” Currie, 82, on August 13, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Reserve Mines, Frank was the son of the late Charlie and Mary (“Minnie”) Currie.
Frank was known around Reserve as “Pook” (rhymes with “took”). He served in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves for 25 years and retired as Chief Warrant Officer in 1987.
However, Frank may be best known as “Sid,” owner and operator of the iconic Sid’s Used Furniture on Charlotte Street in Sydney, which Frank closed upon his retirement in 2011 after 42 years of providing furniture and antiques to Cape Bretoners Island wide.
A people person through and through, what Frank loved best about Sid’s was the revolving cast of characters he would meet in the run of a day. Over the years and decades, it was always the people Frank loved, be they customers or just folks wandering in through the door to have a look around. All were warmly greeted and welcomed.
Upon his retirement, Frank enjoyed spending time with his two old pals, Joe and Donald, and walking beautiful Dominion Beach, where he would sit with his wife, Ann, sipping coffee and watching the waves.
For the last five years, Frank resided at Tiagh Na Mara in Glace Bay.
Frank is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Ann Currie (Daye), his son Charles, his daughter Dawn (Allan), his two grandsons, Callum and Ciaran. He is also survived by his brothers Sheldon (Dawn) and Donald (Maureen), his sister Iris (Don) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, June (Lyndon).
Visitation will be held on Thursday, 1:00 P.M., August 20, at TJ Tracey’s Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, (902)849-4199 with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 P.M. Internment will take place at St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery following the service.
The family would like to thank the excellent staff at Tiagh Na Mara for their kind and loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
