Please share a memory of Roy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Roy Borden Glace Bay We, the family, regret to announce the passing of Roy Borden on August 6, 2020. Roy was born in Glace Bay on November 7, 1930 to the late John and Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Borden. Roy was a devoted Catholic and attended St. Anne’s Parish every week until his death would no longer allow it. He spent his career of 40 years with Dominion Stores of Canada, starting out in Glace Bay, then moving to Summerside, PEI before eventually moving back to Glace Bay and working out of the Sydney store. He met the love of his life and soul mate Charlene (Bailey) at the age of 17. Three years later they were married. They spent 62 wonderful years together until her passing in 2013. Roy was a quiet man with a very dry sense of humour. Roy was a very kind hearted man. He loved spending his summers in Big Pond where many of the locals jokingly referred to him as the Mayor of Big Pond. He made many great memories there with his children and grandchildren. He loved going to dances with Charlene, playing tarbish and cribbage with his family. He also loved to bowl and was past president of the Wednesday night mixed league. Roy enjoyed doing carpentry work, from building his own home on McDonald’s Lane to his wood working shop where he created many fancy pieces of work over the years. His pride and joy were his three children, sons, Roy (Nancy), their children, Roy and Cal; Kevin (Linda), their children, Ashley, Kevin and Shayne; daughter, Charlotte Rogers (Blair), children, Dawn and Tammy, who had a very special bond with him and called him ‘Daddy’. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Gibby Slade; brother-in-law Vivert Bailey and special daughter Sylvia MacPherson who he and Charlene raised from an early age; two nephews, Frances and Darryl Gillis; his great grandchildren, Jessica, Haley, Jorja, Roy, Aria, Michael, Logan, Jayden, Walker and one great great grandchild, Amelia. Besides his parents and wife, Roy was predeceased by his brother Jackie Borden and sister, Olive Gillis. At this time the family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of 4th floor Glace Bay Hospital, 3rd floor New Waterford Hospital and Victoria Haven for taking such good care of Roy the last four years. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS (902-849-4199). A memorial mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 13, 2020 in St. Anne’s Church, Main St., with Fr. Duaine Devereaux presiding. Due to Covid 19 restrictions the public are asked to stay in their vehicles until the family are seated in the church. Masks are mandatory.
