Dear Joanie and Bethany and Bryson,
What a great shock to hear of Jimmy’s passing! Please accept my sincere condolences. Such a beautiful tribute to him in the obituary. How very many lives he touched with his generosity, kindness, humor, and strength of character. I am sorry that I hadn’t had a chance to see him in recent years. I have been back from Vancouver a few times but Mom is now living in Dartmouth near my sister so trips to Glace Bay were infrequent or at the very least, of a short duration.
I have been thinking about how great an influence he was in my life! Over the years I have spoken about him to my husband and children and how he was perhaps the biggest influence for my love of music and to go on and study voice in university. I have great memories of the dozens and dozens of weddings we did together, his introduction to me of classical music by trips to community concerts, making sure I heard good music with great artists, the piano lessons, the music exams, and countless ways he encouraged me to love music of many genres and his undying support for me as not only a singer/musician but as a person first and foremost. He always made me feel that I mattered in this world which was not only a huge confidence booster but a show of genuine love. I will always remember Jimmy with great affection and never forget his goodness towards me and our family. Eternal rest grant unto him Oh Lord and may he Rest In Peace.

Dear Joan and family,
Bob and I were saddened to learn of Jimmy's untimely death. He was such a generous, wonderfully humourous man and his musical talents, despite his humility, were vast. He did so much in the community and I remember so many beautiful moments from all the concerts, and the feeling as we left those churches and concert halls. Rest in peace, Jimmy. Our deepest sympathy to you, Joan and to your family,

Dear Joan and family,
I was so saddened to learn of Jimmy's passing at his beloved Loch Lomond. He is someone who will never be forgotten. I remember meeting Jimmy as a youngster, when waiting for my piano lesson with his father. I was warmed by his presence ever since, and to have done our numerous concerts in the last decade was a thrill and a blessing to me and also to mom. Your friendly, open door was a favorite sight for mom, Tony and me. And whenever he started a sentence with "I don't suppose..." I figured a concert was around the corner, or an outing that would be memorable. Jimmy did so much good in the world, and he will be deeply missed by a multitude of people. Take good care of yourself, Joan, and know that we are thinking of you and sending love. Rest is peace, dear Jimmy.

Mr. McNeil was my grade 3 music teacher when I went to St. Anne's Elementary in 82/83, I remember him playing and tuning the new organ at the newly built St. Anne's Church in 1986 and I went to school with his son Bryson. Bryson and the whole McNeil Family, I offer my heartfelt condolences to all of you, Mr. McNeil saw inspiration for music in all of his students, including myself, I saw him a few weeks at my place of work and his smile when I greeted him. He leaves behind a legacy of musical wisdom to all that he touch and encouraged. Again I offer my condolences to you all.

Dear Joan and Family,
A person comes into your life and leaves an indelible mark just by sharing his knowledge and talent. I met Jimmy when I was a new substitute teacher. We began an interesting conversation about singing and classical music and a week later I was second soprano in his chorale ‘Island Voices.’ He was an amazing teacher and accompanist, but when I heard him play Debussy on his beautiful grand piano, I realized what a truly talented pianist he was. After one practice session, he rose to the pipe organ and scaled Bach with such deft and mastery; it was then that I realized what a truly gifted artist he was. He will surely be missed by many. My sincerest condolences to his loving family, may he rest in peace.

It is difficult to believe that Jimmy is gone.
He was one of a kind. Smart, talented, brimming with humour, engaging with all around him and welcoming to anyone new he chanced upon. He was always a delight to be around and always able to surprise with an observation that was sharp and would cut to the truth of things.
I considered him a friend and there were times he made himself available to share moments with our familiy, whether a wedding or funeral Jimmy was there to share his music, his support and his always understated strength..
He will be missed by Glace Bay and the wider music community. For me I will miss his friendship..

Joan, Bryson, and Bethany, my heart is aching for the pain you are going through in this awful time. I have so many memories of the times we taught together and the times we collaborated on musical projects, not to forget the enjoyment I received from the concerts he staged with his various chorales down through the years. He always had a story, or a joke to share, and his invitations to your home were numerous. The Arts Community has lost an unsung hero. While others received public acclaim, Jimmy went about in his quiet, unobtrusive manner sharing his musical knowledge and expertise, fund-raising to save churches in dire straits, and supporting the Arts in myriad ways. He will be missed. From the comments I have read on various FB posts, I only hope Jimmy knew how much he was loved. Sending you love and prayers.
