Dr. Harold ‘Hank’ Walker
Glace Bay
It is with a great sadness within our hearts, that we the family of Dr. Harmannus ‘Hank’ Walker announce his passing at Glace Bay Hospital with his loved ones by his side on Friday July 3, 2020. Hank was born in Groningen, Netherlands on November 16, 1936. He was the son of the late Johannes ‘Jan’ and Jaapkien (Hazewinkel) Walker.
After living through the years of The Second World War, Hank moved with his family to Zwolle, Netherlands. They resided there until moving to Toronto, Canada on August 25, 1955. One of his proudest achievements was becoming a Canadian citizen. After completing high school, he attended the University of Toronto where he studied medicine and specialized in radiology. Hank joined the Air Force while in Medical School, where he worked as a Medical Officer. Prior to moving to Glace Bay, he worked at a Private Radiology Clinic in Toronto. In 1979, he started work at St. Joseph’s (Community) Hospital, and later joined Glace Bay Hospital where he remained working until his retirement in March 2020.
Professionally, he was a member of Doctor’s NS (Canadian Medical Assoc.), Doctor’s NS Radiology Section, The College of Physicians & Surgeons of NS, The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and the Ontario Medical Assoc. Hank also served as President of The Nova Scotia Medical Association. Teaching was something he loved to do, he taught Physics to radiology students in Toronto, as well as students at UCCB (CBU). Radiology students would spend time with him during their summer clinical rotations. Music was a very important part of his life. He began playing classical violin at the age of 4 and became an accomplished violinist. Hank had a passion for both History and Politics; he was fascinated with the history of World War II and had a vast knowledge of it.
Hank loved the “little ones “(Minnie & Zoe). Most importantly he was devoted to Aidan, whom he thought of as a son, and his loving wife, Janice, of 17 years.
