I had Hubert Morgan as a professor for a year-long History of the Novel course in the 1988-89 school year. My father died in January of that year, and I came to his office hours– uncertain of what I was supposed to be doing, sheepish, failing to put the loss in perspective– to ask for an extension for a paper I was writing. He was so so kind to me, so startled by the news, so compassionate. It made an enormous impact on me, both at the time and since. I have often thought of and tried to imitate that kindness when my own students have to come to me with bad news. I also remember how persuasive he was in that novel course when– with a sly smile on his face– he would argue that George Eliot's Middlemarch was the greatest novel ever written . I have found no reason to disagree. My deep condolences to his family and friends.

Hubert was a great reader of Middle English. Sometimes a little hard to concentrate of what he was saying, he said it so beautifully.

Elizabeth and I deeply regret the loss of a former colleague whose learning and dedication we admired. A fellow medievalist, Elizabeth discovered how much her own interests overlapped with Hubert's when he served as Reader of her MA thesis. For me, similar discoveries happened many times over the years, and were much accelerated on two car trips we shared: one from Vancouver to Victoria in order to attend the Learneds (as they were then called); the other from Halifax to Wolfville to hear a visiting speaker. What Elizabeth and I both shared with Hubert was a belief in the value of interpreting, as best we can, the literary texts created by cultures of the past.

I send my heartfelt sympathies to Hubert's family. I shall always remember his boundless enthusiasm and energy, and his willingness to try new things. The last time I ran into him, at the Halifax airport, he had just returned from an Oxford reunion and was brimming with excitement. He was an adventurer, and a model of the life well lived. May you find comfort in his memory.

Hubert was the first person I ever met at Dalhousie, when he picked me up at the airport before my interview in 1988, and took me on an impromptu detour into town via Peggy's Cove, just so I could see the ocean and warm up with chowder at the Sou'wester (it was March). Such a gesture was typical of the man I came to know as a kind, thoughtful, and humane colleague, who would "gladly lerne and gladly teche." A true scholar and a gentil-man, whom I will remember with every mouthful of both chowder and Chaucer. My condolences.

The Canadian Society of Medievalists sends condolences for the death of a scholar, colleague and friend.
I personally took over Hubert Morgan's job at Dalhousie; my bookshelf is full of books that used to belong to him. Even though I never knew him, I work at Dal surrounded by traces he left.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Dr. Morgan. I had the pleasure of being a student of his at Dalhousie in 1996-97, and he could not have been nicer or a better professor.
