It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Michael on October 30th, 2024 at the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater Nova Scotia, at the age of 77. Michael was born on June 28, 1947 in Oakville, Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents, Marion and Dennis Nutt. Michael is survived by his wife Mary, stepdaughter Jenny, step grandson Rory, brother Stephen (Lynn) and sister Denise. Michael was an academic at an early age and skipped many grades in elementary school. Michael entered high school much younger than his peers and managed to excel in all subject areas but especially in mathematics. After graduating from high school, Michael went on to the University of Toronto where he received his PHD in Mathematics. He was a brilliant mathematician specializing in algebraic geometry and number theory. Michael’s first teaching position was at St. Francis Xavier University where he taught for one year. He then accepted a teaching assignment at Acadia University to teach mathematics. He loved working at Acadia University where he met many close friends and colleagues. Michael taught at Acadia University for 30 years and could often be found having a beer after class at the local pub. Michael loved to travel. He explored many different countries throughout his life, particularly interested in the history and geography of different places. Saturday was a special day for Michael as he would work on the New York Times crossword puzzle with his wife Mary, while listening to the opera and enjoying a cold Keith’s. Michael loved books and book stores. He accumulated a huge collection of books of all genres and read each one. Michael loved puzzles of all kinds, whisky, classical music, poetry, beer, hockey and baseball. Michael will be greatly missed and always remembered.
