Albert was always eager to get out of the house for a bit, even if it was only for a haircut or to a Dr’s appointment.. The car radio would be tuned to the country station and he, being eagle-eyed, would point out the record stores, the trains and usually the moon, if we happened to see it out.
Daily he read the paper cover to cover and would quite often mention relevant news topics. Particularly if there was a story of a child or an animal having been hurt, he would say, “ I don’t like that. “
I could tell, though he was not great at expressing his feelings, that he was vey innocent and tender-hearted.
Most of all he enjoyed getting out for day trips to various airplane/ train venues and then going for fish & chips or dinner somewhere before we returned home.
Homemade bread & blueberry pie( particularly from Brookfield Bakery ) were some of his favourites . Fudge, iced sugar Christmas & peanut butter cookies, birthday cake with blue and green icing, made his day! These were treats and he would eat them in moderation, on special occasions, one piece a day until gone. I always marvelled at his discipline!!
I learned to enjoy & appreciate country music because of him. I was lucky enough to hear him play his fiddle with his brother Tiny one day. Yet, if I asked him to play any other day, he would say, “ I can’t, I just don’t have time!”
I will miss many things about Albert, but mostly his very humble way of being in this world. The things he required to be content, were very few . I will forever think of him when I see Christmas lights & trees, as he always maintained the childhood joy & excitement of these things into adulthood.
May there be trains & planes and lots of country music in heaven, as I am sure he is there.
