Gerald “Chub” Billard, 94 Glace Bay, N.S. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerald "Chub" Billard, aged 94, on October 18, 2024. A proud and dedicated lobster fisherman for most of his life, retiring at the young age of 84. Gerald was known throughout the community for his unwavering work ethic, deep connection to the sea, and kind, generous spirit. His strong hands and even stronger character helped build a life that was as resilient and enduring as the tides he knew so well. Gerald was born on June 20, 1930, and spent his life on beautiful Cape Breton, the island that he loved so much. From a young age, he found his calling on the water, becoming a fixture on the lobster boats, where he worked tirelessly for decades. His knowledge of the sea and dedication to his craft were admired by all who knew him, and he took great pride in passing on his wisdom to the next generation of fishermen. For an incredible 75 years, Gerald was a devoted husband to his beloved Ruby. Theirs is a love story that spanned nearly eight decades. Their bond was a testament to the power of commitment and companionship, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and beautiful family memories. His dedication to his wife and family was as constant as the ocean tides, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Gerald will be remembered for his warm and gentle nature. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Gerald is survived by his loving wife, Ruby (Lemoine), his children, Gary, Sandra (Karl), Terry (Lynn) and Judy. Grandchildren; Shauna (Adam), Elizabeth (Cade), Andrea (Eugene), Amanda (Ryan), Nadara, Leanne (Joey), Jennifer (Wayne),Jessica (Steven), Kristina and Angela (Jerry), great-grandchildren; Evan, Jaden, Matthew, Jailyn, Olivia, Jake, Logan and Maria Rosa and son-in-law, Jimmy O’Handley; sisters; Dorothy (Jim) Munden and Eileen Bigley and brothers; Jack and Raymond. Gerald is predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Alfreda Billard. His daughter Geraldine and daughter-in-law Maureen; his sisters; Joan, Beverley, Steen and Bet and brothers, Gordon, Arthur, Donald and Charles. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love, and dedication that will live on in those who were lucky enough to call him husband, dad, poppy and friend. As per Gerald’s wishes, there will no visitation. A family service will be held at a later date. “Love is a journey, and my compass always points to the sea.”
