John Edward COOPER, Junior
At his residence in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Saturday, August 10, 2024, John passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 60. Loving father to Colleen Dampier (Shane) and Papa to Max and Charlotte. Predeceased by his parents John Cooper, Sr. and Margaret (Murphy), and stepfather Ken Mitchell; he is survived by his sisters and brother Barbara Weiner (Joseph), Martha Cooper, Hugh Preston Cooper (Tracy), and Alexandra Cooper.
John was born in 1963 in Toronto, Ontario and led a colourful life. He attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Amherstview, Ontario, Regiopolis-Notre Dame High School in Kingston, Ontario, and Port Arthur Collegiate Institute in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It was during high school that John joined the Reserves as a member of the 18 Medical Company (Thunder Bay), but before transferring to the regular forces, he practised being dramatic both on stage and behind the scenes at Magnus Theatre in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
John joined the Regular Forces in 1987 as a medic and was stationed in Petawawa, Ontario. He was a member of the Canadian peacekeepers mission in Somalia and also served as a peacekeeper in Germany and several UN tours sailing between northern Europe and the Caribbean. He retired from service as a Sergeant in 2012 while stationed at the Canadian Armed Forces Base Greenwood,
A lover of motorcycles since childhood when he was brought home by the police when he was 14 for riding his moped without a licence, John co-founded the A’RMUNN Veterans Riding Club in 2013. He was an active member and was well loved and respected in the Nova Scotia biking community. Generous to a fault, John always lent a helping hand to anyone in need.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 1:00 - 4:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 142, 50 Hillcrest Street in Halifax. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John’s name to the Bikers Down Society of Nova Scotia.
A’RMUNN Veterans Riding club will be hosting John's last ride through Peggy's Cove (date to be determined). Information about the ride will be posted on the SUPPORT A'RMUNN TÉAGHLAC CÉAD VRC Facebook page.
