Obituary of Mary Margaret MacIntosh
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Margaret MacIntosh, affectionately known as "Mary Mac," passed away in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 2, 2024, at the age of 91. Remarkably independent until just weeks before her passing, Mary lived a full and vibrant life that touched the hearts of many.
Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Mary was the beloved daughter of the late Margaret Donovan and John A. McIntosh. The family owned McIntosh’s Superior Store in Glace Bay, a local grocery store that served as a hub of community life. Some of Mary’s fondest memories were made at the family’s cherished East Bay bungalow, a place that remains central to family lore and where many joyful times were shared. Mary and her sisters, while distinguished in their own right, were known for their knack for joke-telling and their wonderful sense of humour.
Mary devoted her life to education, becoming a respected school teacher at both junior and senior high schools in Glace Bay. Known for her impeccable grammar and high standards, she was a tough yet kind educator who held her students to a level of excellence that many credit with shaping their lives. Her influence was, as some have said, “much more than a smidgeon”, as it extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a positive and lasting impact on generations of students.
While living in Glace Bay, Mary was known for her fondness for her dog, Oscar. The two were inseparable and could often be seen together around town.
After retiring, Mary moved to Halifax, where she began a wonderful new chapter in her life. She became a familiar face in her neighbourhood, known for her decades-long daily walks from her home on Anchor Drive just off Purcells Cove Road, to the Quinpool Road Tim Hortons. Exceptionally polite and always going out of her way to make meaningful connections, Mary’s kindness and warmth earned her many friends.
Among her most meaningful relationships were her close friends, Bob and Margie Caume. Mary and Bob met while working at Saint Michael’s Senior High in 1962, and their deep friendship continued in Halifax, where they shared countless dinners and moments of joy.
A true adventurer at heart, Mary travelled the world with her dear friend, the late Marie Schelew, savouring all the beauty and experiences the world had to offer. Mary’s generosity was evident in her volunteer work with Souls Harbour Mission and her support of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society in Glace Bay.
Mary also had a special place in her heart for her 20 nieces and nephews, with whom she built individual and treasured relationships. Always ready to lend a helping hand, she made each person feel uniquely special.
Mary leaves behind a legacy of giving, human connection, education, and love. The world is a little less bright without her, but we can all honour her memory by carrying forward the values she embodied so fully.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Angus McIntosh; and her sisters, Helen (Roddie) MacAdam, Sally (Mike) Mahoney, and her twin sister Betty (Leo) McCormick. She is survived by her sister, Anne (Gerald) Caudle and 19 nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, August 14th at 1:00 pm at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists in Halifax. A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 2nd from 1 to 3 pm at T.J. Tracey's, 6 Churchill Drive, in Sydney.
