I had the privilege of being Mary's student at St. Michael's High School in the 60's. For sure, I wasn't as good a student as she was a teacher. She was tough and a no nonsense teacher who commanded respect. I admired her stamina and determination. When I visited the Halifax area, I was always hoping that I might run into her and thank her for the motivation and spirit she incited in me.
I also had the privilege of having her sister Helen teach me in grade 3 at Holy Cross School in the 50's. The MacIntosh family was one you always took notice of and never forgot.
Anne, to you and the rest of your family, my sincere sympathy for your loss and gratitude for having known you.

We, her former students at St. Mike's (Glace Bay), attest to Mary's determination to deliver the best education & discipline a teacher of her generation might. Her goals were clear, and we benefited from that encounter. She will not be easily forgotten.

I'm not sure we understood at the time what a great person and wonderful teacher Miss MacItosh was. But I am quite certain that if our graduating class of St Mike's 1967 were to get together now we would all have a story about something she said or did that helped us back then or later in our lives. She was "one of a kind" and I'm so glad to hear that she lived and prospered for so long.

Mary MacIntosh was one of my all-time favourite teachers. I recall clearly preparing my History assignments for her exacting standards. It was exciting to have a teacher who had high expectations of her students and communicated them precisely. Only a few days ago, I was talking about her with my family!
She was a rare soul and will be missed.

Mary MacIntosh was one of my teachers at
St. Michael’s High School in Glace Bay in the 1970’s and I have remembered her fondly over the years.
My dog, Sam, would follow me to school some days and although I didn’t allow him in the school somehow he would always manage to find me in my classroom…Miss MacIntosh’s classroom. She was a strict teacher but she had a softness for me and my dog. She always allowed Sam to stay by my desk as she taught the class. That memory always brings a smile to my face. She was also a fan of candy for the brain. Before every test or exam she would pass out candy telling us it was sugar to stimulate our brains into thinking. Lol…I’ve had some memorable teachers but Miss MacIntosh has always been among my favourites.

Dear family: Oddly, I only recognized this obituary by the woman’s face! Some years ago, before I retired, and occasionally when I walked to work, our paths would cross, and we would acknowledge each other on the Purcell’s Cove/Quinpool stretch. “Exceptionally polite” clearly would describe her demeanour. Eventually, she introduced herself, told me she walked to Tim’s every day and lived on Anchor Drive. She felt that walking could be an effective way to ward off dementia type diseases. After my retirement our paths did not cross as often, but I would see her at times, still walking. I would never have aged her at 91. I am pleased to read that she lived independently for so long. I’m sure she would have been an extraordinary friend and very loved family member. So sorry for your loss.

I had the good fortune to have been a student of Mary’s at St. Michael Senior High School. I later joined the teaching staff at the same school. She welcomed me with kindness and respect. We were colleagues for nineteen years. Mary was one of the kindest and respectful people I ever knew. She was in a class by herself. I have wonderful memories of her. May she rest in peace. My condolences to her family.

Aunt Mary taught me at St Mike's. She was firm, fair and approachable. She accepted me for who I was not how I arrived in the family. I was surprised about 7 months ago I answered my phone and it was Aunt Mary. Very short conversation but I wonder knowing her did she percrive the turmoil in my life (PTSD) from my military service. Aunt Mary you can RIP because you defined teaching and being an amazing human being. Thank you
