Obituary of Thomas Michael Power

POWER, Thomas M. – 81 of Brookside, NS – Retired Fire Chief for the City of Halifax passed away July 26, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anita (LeBlanc); sons, Joseph and Daniel; and five grandchildren.
Born in Halifax, October 14, 1942. He was educated in Halifax, attending Saint Patrick’s High and Dalhousie University. He served in the R.C.A.F. where he received pilot training and after his release, he flew for many years from Halifax Flying Club until it closed.
Tom joined the Halifax Fire Department in 1967, worked his way up through the ranks and was appointed Fire Chief for the City of Halifax in 1988, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Canadian Fire Chiefs Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. In the early years, prior to being appointed Fire Chief, while working the shifts he worked as a contractor, building and repairing many houses. He also operated a successful video business in the early 80’s. He was an avid skier and for over ten years he and Anita had many ski trips to Austria and Italy with their German and Austrian Fire Chief friends.
Tom had many hobbies including his antique autos, which he loved to maintain and drive. He was a master model maker, building numerous airplane and ship models over the years. He was a member of the maritime Ship Modellers Guild and after he retired, he volunteered his time and skills to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, repairing their display models and building over three dozen display ship models for the museum.
Tom had a full and happy life and he always said if he could live his life over, he would not change a thing.
His body has been cremated and the Celebration of his Life will take place in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Wednesday 31st July 2024, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
